Wood interchanges on SMLEs; just be sure to check your bedding and Magpie Screw adjustment.

The rifle was produced originally with a VERY nice drift-adjustable rear sight. This was the Mark I, Mark I*.

When the Mark III came into production (end of January, 1907) the rifle was produced with a different, but still drift-adjustable rear sight. Owing to the time and expense of producing this sight, it was dropped, IIRC in 1916.

Of course, rifles which have been in for FTR or serious regimental or field repair can have anything: whatever was available at the time or cannibalised from a wreck.

They are a nice sight, too. Even the later-issue drift-adjustable sight may be adjusted in 10-yard increments for range by using the little thumb-wheel and there are quite fine graduations for drift adjustment. The early version on the Mark I and I* is a dream!

I managed to get one of those sights too. I think they were supposed to have been made up to a certain date during WWI. They are counter to the usual convention. Might have a left hand thread. Adjustment is *supposedly*not as fine as say a Garand rear sight, but this might be Uncle Sam propaganda. Makes sight in so much easier!

The one I got came from Numrich. Of course defer to Smellie our national treasure of milsurp knowledge! :)
