I ran into a new problem to me the other day.

I have a Lakefield Mark II, bolt action 22. It started spitting back at me, and when I pulled the bolt, the barrel looks obstructed. It is smoke that fills the bore.

I tried cleaning it, and different types of ammo, but after a few shots the problem repeats. Some of this ammo has some white mild corrosion on the bullet, I think probably from back when I had a small basement flood, but it fires fine in other 22's, and the problem occurs with other ammo.

Any thoughts here? It's a dandy shooter otherwise.

Thats preatty normal I believe. When I look down my barrel after shooting you can barrely see any light becuase of "gun smoke" in the barrel. It takes a few minutes to clear out :)

I have noticed this smoke in barrel before, normal function I believe.
What exactly is "spitting back" at you?

I assume it's powder residue spitting back?? The smoke is thick enough that the barrel appears obstructed...no visible light. I assumed it was causing some excess pressure and blowing back some powder...but that's just my guess. If you guys say that level of smoke is normal, I'll look for another cause. I don't think it's normal in my other guns, but I'll pay more attention next time.

I've had semi's spit back at me slightly, but when a bolt action does this, it usually means there is a problem. Possibly headspace or pierced primers. I have also seen one that had a 4" split in the barrel longitudinally in line with the lands and grooves. The owner said this one really spit at him, and asked me to repair it for him. He didn't even know it was cracked!

Had an old Imperial Match .22 case split on me on the weekend. Hell of a bang and smoke out of my action. I've got several boxes that I got off a junk table that are going into the dud can at the range.

Picked up an Aguila casing (I assume - an "A" headstamp) off of one of the range benches that had bulged and starting to split around the rim.

So it happens.

ive got a 22MK2FV and i get the smoke all the time when i pull my bolt back. try different ammo, i found mine does decent with american eagle, dyna points, just dont get the remington thunderbolt. doesnt seal well.
