Hi...does anyone know of any safe smokeless loads for a steel reproduction Remington 1858 in 44 cal? Any thoughts on the pros and cons? I have had great luck with nitro for black loads in double rifles but this is new to me. Thanks in advance, Kevin.

I'm assuming this is for a 45LC conversion cylinder? There's a bunch of low velocity "cowboy" loads on Hogdon's site. As long as you keep the velocities down below 800-900 fps you should be safe.

Don't do it. The gun will blow up! Maybe not right away, but it will blow up. It's not designed for the pressure curves of smokeless powder. Try one of the black powder subs, if you don't like black. There are some that are hardly corrosive at all and really easy to clean up. Research around.

you're scaring me, dude- cap and ball are pyrodex or black powder only- smokless loads will cause the gun to erupt- has to do with the way the powder fills the cylinder and probably the way the cap interacts with the powder- there's a reason WHY IT SAYS BLACK POWDER ONLY- maybe others can share more light on this- the only instances i've heard of subbing smokless for black were in a ruger old army, and the guy used a charge of 45 colt equiv, and blew the back out of the cylinder, pooched the frame, and blew off the top strap- in other words- don't even think of it
