Smoker Build Question

I am hoping this will be a quick and easy answer. I have googled this question and came up with 1000 different responses all which don't exactly answer the question.

I recently moved and found an older homemade bbq in the garage. Its made of a metal drum cut in half and has a grill etc.

I plan on cleaning it out and making it into a smoker. What should I 100% make sure is done to this bbq to make it a smoker. From what I can tell is its just a drum cut in half with a grill and that's it.

You are going to need a sperate smoke chamber....Fogducker has built a few of these, maybe PM him and he can direct you to the thread that has the pics.
