How many of you have used snap caps in your rifes, and have you noticed that sometimes they don't eject? I thought I was having an extractor problem until I used live ammo or dummy rounds based on real brass and real bullets. Also, I noticed that the rims on snap caps get pretty chewed up in a short period of time.

In my experience the common "snap caps" are not worth buying. A-Zoom aluminum ones are often made with improper dimensions. The cheap plastic plug in place of the primer doesn't help cushion the firing pin after a half dozen hits. They are mis-named, and are actually "action proving dummies". Real cartridges work better for that purpose, of course assembled with out primer or powder. Even worse are the red and clear plastic ones made in Italy with a spring loaded brass plunger. They break the rims off after a few loading sessions, and don't work well as action proving dummies because of dimensional problems.
I use proper spring loaded "Snap caps" purchased from New England Custom Gun when I actually need snap caps for my double rifles. They cost more, do not function as action proving dummies, but do properly cushion the firing pin when "snapping" or dry firing a double or single shot. They are made of aluminum, with hard nylon spring loaded plungers. They last forever. They are not full length. And are not required for any bot action rifle that I am aware of.

The only guns I routinely use snap caps for are double guns. The rest I don't bother, but I don't make a habit of dry firing my rimfires or Winchester 94"s. A decent bolt gun, like a Mauser or your Ruger should be able to be dry fired till the end of time without any damage.

Take a “real fired brass” pop the primer and replace it with silicone caulking, trim when dry and you are ready to go. Use a colour that stands out and doesn’t look any where close to a real primer

OP - they "don't eject" - a story.

An acquaintance brought over a 17 HMR rifle - could not get factory ammo to go into chamber. He said he had inserted some sort of tool in there to scrap out something - in my bore scope, I could see "ruts" along the chamber walls, and then metal from the ruts that was thrown up from the ruts - so that was what was stopping the cartridge to enter the chamber.

I bought a set of A-Zoom "Action Proving Dummy Rounds". They would not go into the chamber either. So I made a tool on my lathe, used it, and then multiple polishing with steel wool and could now get the action proving dummy to enter and the bolt would close. I took that rifle out to shooting place - unfired Winchester Super-X ammo would chamber and extract repeatedly - but when I fired one, that one not coming out - had to tap out with cleaning rod down from the muzzle - is obvious scrape marks in two places on that fired brass casing - so tells me that the fired case must have swollen a bit when fired, and that I do not have that chamber smooth enough.

However, the A-Zoom Action Proving Dummy Rounds still chamber and extract as expected. So does unfired factory Winchester Super-X ammo. But the fired one did not extract. So, also suggests to me that the Action Proving Dummy is not telling me much about whether I can get a fired casing out of chamber. Not sure what they thought it's purpose was - what I saw said it proves that the thing will feed and chamber, and will extract if unfired. Does NOT prove whether you can extract a fired round, though.

I've used Armsport snap caps in a number of my rifles. They are red plastic with brass heads and spring-loaded brass primer pieces. They are a close match shape-wise to a loaded round, and I've found that they behave much like a spent case re ejection. They are widely available for a fair number of rifle cartridges.

The best snap caps I've obtained have come from Harbour Arms in the US. They are sturdy aluminum with spring-loaded brass primer pieces. I have them for my .243 Win., 6PPC, 6.5x55, and .270 Win.
