Snap Caps?

Make your own. Fill the primer pockets with silicone or hot glue, crazy glue jacketed bullets in and you're ready to go. When they get beat up chuck 'em & make new ones.

I would only recommend this if your dummies were easily identifiable. You would have to paint the brass a high vis color or something.

I press check like crazy when I dry fire. A visual indicator of an inert round is what I'm looking for.

I use a well worn set of A-zoom snap caps. Brownells or Amazon have them. These:

is automotive paint good for this?

Depends on how think the paint was. Too thick and they might stick in the chamber.

For the trouble, I'd just buy a set of A-Zooms and be done with it.

you're right
i've just looked up on Amazon.ca, they have them but $53/5 snap caps
i use all brass for my loading, so i may buy or pick up some steel or aluminum case to make some snap caps then.

That's insanely high!

I'm sure some Canadian dealers have them...

Yep, these guys. They are a board sponsor, never ordered from them but the price is better...

I recommend making your own but there are lots of places that sell them. Canadian tire, Cabelas, Marstar, Amazon, Ebay......They get expensive so just make your own. If your not sure, use Google and YouTube.

I just put them in a vise and drill a hole through the casing. The dimensions of the cartridge go unchanged and there's a clear identifier on it.

That said, I did it without the drilled hole like this for a long time. I only started drilling them to show new shooters they were safe. As long as you keep your ammo stored in a separate room from wherever you dry fire it's a non-issue.

You are much more trusting than I am.

I would rather dry fire with an empty chamber than see brass when I press check.

nickel plated is good if you are only using brass, nice and shiney, easy to see. I did this for my .30-06 training rounds.
