Took my two boys and the mutt out yesterday to set rabbit snares. Only set about 6. These are pics from the check this morning.

What happens when the ravens find your rabbit before you do (guts were still warm). Coyotes and larger don't leave the gut pile behind and generally break the snare when they steal your catch.

Success!! Only one bunny but the other snares were knocked off center so were near misses. A slight adjustment was made to each one so I expect more conections tomorrow.

Keep us posted with more pics:D Nice to see kids out havin fun with their dad, especially in the outdoors...way to go:)
Good luck:dancingbanana:

I was hunting deer on their winter range in late November one year. The snow came late, the deer didn't show, but the snow shoe rabbits were in their winter whites. We put away the centre fires and got out the 22's and had a great time.

I miss snaring rabbits. I have not done it since I was a teenager. Lots of snare wire kicking around here, I should try a few this winter.

Great seeing pics of the kids with big smiles on thier faces having fun in the bush. Like was said before, they will remember it forever :)

I was given instruction by my Dad at a very young age. And his methods, one would never loose a rabbit.
You take your snare wire, run it over your leg to remove all kinks , and have a natural round going on.
Then twist the wire to form an eye for the wire to pass, then just make the opening correct size 5 inches or so.
Then the key element , form another eye on the running end, then take a nylon cord through that eye , and tightly attach it to an alder that you place across the trail , this prevents the rabbit from twisting the wire to a point where it breaks. The rabbit can go back and forth , and the snare never gets weak and can be re used.
At survival school the school had ordered the wrong guage of wire , too thin, anyway they said to double it up:D , right, I tested it.
Had 4 rabbits come up to the snare and go round, way round.
So I used the old mans method, single stran, and the rabbit did not even kink the wire. Only fella to get a rabbit during the 2 weeks, they were few and far between , had to go quite a distance to find some.
So anyway figured I would share the method. :)

Is it legal to set snares in Sask?
And does anyone have a diagram on how to make and set snares?

I lifted this from the regs:

It is a violation to:

Use neck snares without a special permit except to take beaver under the ice or to take squirrels and rabbits.

Seems like you're good to go.:D

Ya thats a note to those idiots that would snare big game:rolleyes:

Well, in a survival situation, you'd get a lot more deer with snares than you would with a bullet! Not sure how you would snare big game, but a trap would work, no?

Wanna go try for some Dogleg?
What guage wire will work best do you guys think?
I am so excited this freakin winter is getting to be too long!!
