I'm looking to build a sniper rifle for less than a $1000, that would be for the rifle, mounts, scopes etc... I'm looking to shoot between 300 and 600 yards. I don't want to do a lot of customization as I'm new to this, I heard 308 win is the best choice but would like to hear from some people with experience. Any suggestions would help!

I can't believe I get to be the first guy to tell you that sniper rifles are only used by snipers.
The Savage precision carbine seems good ,it comes camo'd.
If its only for targets .223 rem is the way to go.IMO

what miltiary unit are you with that you need a sniper rifle??? a sniper rifle is any rifle used by a sniper... i think you want a target or precission rifle...

also i hate to burst your bubble but 1000 for a precisssion rifle is pretty low budget, how accurate would you like to be? somthing like a 700 spstactical, and bushness elite 3200 would come in around your price range

edit - DAMN IT! missed the sniper comment by seconds

I have a sps tactical and it shoots great

Doesn't our military give you sniper types rifles to use? Assuming you are just one of us regular folk and want an accurate rifle to shoot, my suggestion would be to look on the EE (after you get access) for a good used Remington or Savage rifle in .223cal and look into reloading your own ammo.

I just took a peek at my LeBaron Catalogue and see the Remington Model 700 SPS Tactical in .223 or .308 listed at $586.63. The 700 SPS Tactical AAC-SD in .308 (with a green stock and maybe different trigger) was listed at $610.94. You could add a Bushnell 3200 in either 3x9X or the fixed 10X with target adjustment turrets for a bit over $200. Even with good mounts you should be able to get in the game for under $1000.

I just picked up a used, looks like new Savage Model 10FP LE2 20" barrelled tactical carbine with heavy barrel, 911 Picatinny mount and Accutrigger for about $500 and plan to put one of the scopes mentioned above (I have both) to try her out shortly. Maybe another $40-80 for a bipod and that will keep me busy with her for quite a while, whether or not I pick up a more expensive scope in the future.

While I personally don't mind calling mine a "sniper rifle," especially since adding such a title to my first post registry purchase just adds to the insult towards the antis, I'd be the last person to ever claim that I'm a sniper by a long shot. That term has a very specific military meaning that hardly applies to most of us recreational shooters.

just go with stock savage 300 win or .223 and put leopold 3x9 scope on it.
savage will cost around $300-400 scope will be around $400. rings and all that include ten you will pay around $1000.
or get remington 700sps to start off.

either .223, 300w, 300wm will for for 600yard range and all depends on what you are willing to use it for. If this rifle is going to be just for plinking then yea .223 works great.. if it will be used on all around + hunting any game in canada, id stay close to 300win.
would stay away with 300RUM, 30-378, or odd caliber if you are budget concerned and both .223 or 300 would have affortable prices on ammo with lots of selections.
good luck on your rifle hunt!

Dooran, you've posted this question in 2 different forums.

I gave you a legit answer in the first one, so now I'm just here to make fun of you. Sniper rifles are rifles in the hands of snipers, of which you are not. I figure that's a safe assumption seeing how you posted the question. :kickInTheNuts:

I'm just effing with ya, buy a gun and start shooting long. It's a blast.

Dooran look at the rem 700 line and savage line of rifles they are upgradeable with lots of aftermarket stuff.

You could start with a rem 700 sps or a savage with varmint barrel in either .223 or 308.
The 223 is cheaper to shoot so you can decide that they are both accurate.

As far as scopes check out the used stuff in the EE and rifles to of course.

Before you buy anything check back here for more feedback.

Yes, I'm new to this, I guess I'm looking for a long range precision rifle with a tactical look. I posted in both because you suggested this one, I don't even have my pal yet but I own 7 guns through a friend. I have a few projects on the go and that's why the low budget. I'm hoping to get some info from some experienced shooters to make things a little easier, that's why I joined this forum so any help for a newb would be appreciated.

I don't know what a tactical look is. Personally, I think shooting effectiveness trumps appearance.
But a Remington SPS with the heavy barrel - or the Savage equivalent - in .308 or .223 would do the job. The .223 should have at least a 1:9 twist, a bit faster would be better.
The scope should have target knobs. Hunting type knobs are not all that useful for repeated settings at longer ranges. The 10x40 Bushnell mentionned would likely be the best low cost option. Unfortunately it doesn't have parallax adjustment.
The Remington/Savage/Bushnell combination would come in under the grand.
If you don't handload, you should really consider getting started. Target grade ammunition can be assembled at a significant savings over store bought.

Remington 5R Milspec

They were around the $1000 mark and come in .223 or .308. You can find them on the EE from time to time. They are made to shoot Federal Match 168/175SMK's and come ready to go, just add a scope. No need to #### around with them. Epoxy7 and I have seen a fair few custom rifle come up short to our off the shelf/out of the box 5R's.

My .02

Definatly stick with a .223 or .308 ignore the idea of 300 wm it is not needed for anything out to 600 yards the ammo is alot more expensive and if your new to shooting will be much more difficult to learn on. If your set on your price I would look to a lower priced savage or rem 700 then get a sightron SII or bigsky and if your willing to spend a little more go with sightron SIII optics. In most cases your glass is more important then the rifle
