Sniper's Hide Mad Minute at 411m - Ruger Precision Rifle vs Accuracy International AX

One thing to note is that Frank appears to have modified his AI mags so the bolt will close on an empty magazine for some reason. Normally the bolt will not go forward once the mag is empty, which tells you its time to reload instead of cycling, aiming and dropping the hammer on an empty chamber. AI actions cycle so smoothly that you cannot feel them picking up the rounds.

Looks like the Ruger is quite a rifle and should be a great option for people looking to get into PRS without selling a kidney.

Smooth cycling is incredibly important when you're shooting under the clock in awkward positions... sometimes from your weak side.

Having your bolt bind causes your muzzle to nosedive when you're balancing the rifle on a barricade and then you waste precious time re-acquiring your target. This will also happen if you don't disable the bolt hold-open. With electronic hearing protection you hear the round being picked up and hitting the feed ramp. With a smooth reload, your sights will still be pointed at the target.

Thanks for the info on the bolt hold open when shooting a match Kombayotch, I did not know that.

It's one of the reasons why many of the brands of actions that are popular in F-Class are not popular in PRS. Because the bolt binds on them if you put any kind of side force when pushing it forward, which you WILL end up doing shooting odd positions under stress.

The short action AXMC's don't have the empty mag hold open like the old AI's. Not sure about the long actions.

Good to know, I guess the mags must be different now. Some guys used to remove the tab that stopped the bolt on the AW mags. I like the feature because I'm used to things working that way (bolt locked back on last round).

Are you sure some AI have that? I've never heard of that feature on a bolt action.

My AI AE MkIII doesn't have it, and I don't know why you would. How would you single feed on an empty mag then? It makes no sense.

The AW's had it, the AE used a different mag that didn't have that feature. There's pros and cons to it hence why J996 mentioned that some people modified the mags so it wouldn't hold open on empty, some like it some dont. K31's have this also

It makes perfect sense to me. I would rather know my mag is empty and I have never single fed.

Shoot them enough and you can tell when the mag is empty. There is a pretty distinctive sound when you eject the last round and if you modified your mags you could feel the difference if you slammed it home on an empty chamber. As for single feeding with unmod-Ed mags the right side position was the low side and not difficult to press down, you just can't toss 'em on top like a Remington.
