Snow Goose Migration GPS Tracking

I had no idea their numbers had increased to 10,000,000 birds! Last time I read a report they were at 4,000,000. No wonder we see more and more each year and people talk of how there never used to be any migrating through here.

Yes, 10 million is unreal! Looks like the radio tags send a position update out once a day. I'm curious about the size of the tag and how they attach it to the goose?

We shot one once wearing a transmitter. It was about the size of a walnut, flat on one side with an antenna about 9"-11" long. It was attached(glued?) to the skin on the back just behind the shoulder joint. The antenna ran beneath the feathers towards the rear of the bird and stuck out just above the tail feathers and ended about 1" past the rear most feathers. A friend of mine guides for a local outfitter here. He had a Speck pass through the decoys a few weeks ago wearing a transmitter box on its neck. He gave it a free pass rather than call the shot.

Ever wonder? They are very tasty, just boil them with potatoes and carrots etc. For 1 and a half to 2 hours add salt then I am coming for supper. I like em better than goose, that’s just me he he he.
