I'm heading up to temagami on the weekend for grouse and hopefully some shoeshow hare. I have been going for the last few years and have done well on grouse but have struck out on snowshoe hare. I used to do very well in the Timmins area for hares and expected temagami to be good but it doesn't seem to be the case. Has anyone had luck this year in that area? Thanks

There are lots of snowshoe hares in the Temagami area, you are just not seeing them... the best time is the last half of November when they are white and there is no snow, they stick out like sore thumbs.

Do you have a beagle? Or are you just walking and spotting? Generally you don't see them until they move, although you can spot them first... they usually do a short sprint and then stop to see if they are being followed, shoot them when they stop. Better have a .410 or 20 gauge to get through the brush, although if you are able to spot them in an opening you can head shoot with a .22, but that is a tough way to put dinner in the pot.

Ya unfortunately no beagle. I'm in the red squirrel rd area of that helps at all. I did well in Timmins using the spot and stalk method. I didnt even see much sign there either that's why I was curious if maybe they were at the low part of the cycle in that area.

There are lots of good areas for hares up the Red Squirrel road system... spotting them is the only issue. If you get lucky and get some snow, the density of the tracks is a tip-off... check out the top of mounds carefully, hares like to sit up where they can see and drop down the backside of the mound when danger approaches.
