So I just sent the MO for my SKS and a crate of ammo. I have been reading the stickies but I could not find anything about cleaning out Cosmo. I heard that hot water works well for the metal bits, but what about the stock? Would steam work?

You can most certainly oil the gas system and firing pin...if you keep everything clean, and also don't use it oiled in super cold weather.

I give those parts a good spray with G96.

Metal on metal without some sort of lubrication is BAD.

Did you buy your SKS from Leverarms? Reason I ask is that their SKS's are bathed in oil, not cosmoline. If so, this oil is easily removed by wiping the stock with kerosene soaked rag. Dip the metal parts in the kerosene.

No, got it from Frontier. But if they got them from Lever then I guess its the same.

none of the russians are in cosmo, at least none of the ones i bought/seen .

just wipe the exterior with a rag and clean the interior with solvent . pls clean the bolt thoroughly.

I spoke to a fella that puts his stocks in the oven and wipes them down a few times to get the cosmo out. To clean the metal clean it and shoot the ###X out of it then clean it again. good luck I love mine.:D

I received mine from Frontier yesterday and i must say that i am very happy. It's a Tula 1951. All the serial number match exept the stock that has been forced match. It is the left one.

I read about and tried the oven trick for the stock and it worked well. There may be lots of cosmo on the stock or very little, either way you will want to remove it.

Turn your oven on to it's LOWEST setting and put some tinfoil on the bottom rack to catch any spill over. Lean the stock up inside the oven, being careful not to touch the element at the top, and leave it in for 15 min at a time. After 15 straight min in the warm oven, take it out with a rag and you will see that the cosmo has become liquid on the stock. Simply wipe it with the rag and put it back in for another 15 min- repeating the process until the seeping stops. If there doesn't seem to be much cosmo, look around the screws and butt plate, there will likely be some small amounts there. Thats it.

Wow, after seeing what they sent you, makes me excited to see what I get, well I mean even more excited. I think I am getting a '54.

This is good news Curtton. I have a Russkie on the way and was kinda stressing about getting the thing all cleaned up.

i have no idea why people are saying cosmo , i owned all 3 imports and none of them have cosmo.

OK, well thats sums that up. So its just oil, not cosmo. Use A cleaner and I am set. OK Sweet. MO just arrived there so she should be here in about a week, hopefully less.
