So I ordered an "Ought Six"

Buffing the action is no biggie, but the trigger should be good, as I don't want to spend 100 bucks on an aftermarket. I am not even sure if they make them for the Hawkeye.

The Hawkeye is the same action and barrel as the MKII, they just changed the trigger and slimmed down the stock. The action being rough has nothing to do with it being a Hawkeye and not a MKII. Any aftermarket triggers will fit both models.

I noticed the finish of the Hawkeye is the flat matte finish, almost looks like the remington SPS, which seems to be sprayed on the inside of the action, giving it a rough feel on the remington. I wonder if they sprayed the inside of the Hawkeye action with with the same finish that is on the outside, that would give it a rougher feel? I still would like to try one....

Re the Ruger actions. Ya they're a little rough out of the box all right or at least mine (2006 model) was. After a hundred rounds or so and otherwise cycling the action it is now quite smooth...

I agree he is an ass, but I was hoping in his review at least the trigger would be good and the action smooth. He actually stated the trigger was terrible and the Mark ll trigger was better.

I'd say the trigger is a mild improvement on the MKII- from what I have gathered. My trigger was sent out and polished up by a gunsmith for $30 and it's perfect now. So Hawks either doesn't want ot or doesn't know how to fix the issue. FWIW, most other guys I've conversered wiht said ther triggers were fine.

The acti was like sandpaper. on

It's not smooth liek a Sako, but it works just fine and a bit of shooting will smooth it up. It still does what it is supposed to do.:)

I dont' knwo abou tthe stock, mine is a synthetic. Chances are it's like most factory wood stocks these days, which is tyo say- kinda crappy.:)

Yeah, I think I will order one and give one a try..... Here is a quote from the article that leaves me with a little concern. If anyones wants the whole article, email me, its too long to post.

Ruger Hawkeye SS review in 338 Federal:

"One problem that we encountered during our range testing was that if pressure was applied to the bolt handle at an angle when closing the bolt, the bolt would tend to bind. Also, when unlocking the bolt after firing a shot it would sometimes stick, requiring a blow from the hand or excessive force on the bolt handle to get it to rotate to the fully up (unlocked) position. Both problems, we are sure, were caused by the failure to polish the bolt lugs, receiver raceways, and other mating surfaces when this rifle was made. Even the cylindrical bolt body is not polished. This lack of workmanship is especially regrettable on a medium bore rifle that might reasonably be used to hunt dangerous predators such as bear and big cats."
