.. so I think I've just gained an interest in getting an M38

I've always kinda had an interest in the M38 and it seems to be gaining some traction.

No real interest in the M44 or the 91/30.

So what's the long and short of what I should be looking for, for a good specimen ?

I'm not interested in collecting at all but not worried about paying a bit extra for a nice one. I want to use the darn thing.

Where should I be looking for better offerings on this model ? What I'm I generally expected to be spending and what is the average accuracy on the M38 with surplus ?

If not for collecting - just look for one with best possible barrel. They are not very common now days... just get M44 and unscrew bayonet - you'll get pretty close to M38 without "destroying" gun ;]
I used to have M38 and it was shooting 2.5-3" at 100y from sandbags with chinese surplus ammo.
