My gun is just like that....and i went trap shooting with it today...
I shot 13/25 and it was my 3rd time shooting.
Is it bad that i went with this gun? Everyone i saw there had a crazy 28 or 30" barrels...? Lots of ppl complain about my gun beeing 2 loud? Should i just tell them to shove it? Or am i at fault here

i would :p id also tell them to buy better ear muffs if they dont like the sound

Some short bbl guns can be quite loud at the trap and skeet field. Go ahead and tell them to shove it it is your right... but keep in mind many of them have been there way longer than you and if you do such a thing you may find yourself looking for someone to push the button for you as you may have noone to shoot with.

I have a buddy who insisted he was going to shoot a perfect round (skeet) with his short bbl guns, it never happened. He did well with his O/Us and eventually did it with a pump with a 24"bbl.

I used to believe shorter was better as well... I am still using a short bbl in Trap and Skeet terms 26" to be exact. They are just a waste of time if you want to improve. But again, enjoy it, it is still fun.

I think it's perfectly possible with a short barrel in SKEET (I've come close a number of times with a 20" 870), but trap is a different story; the targets simply get too far away too fast.

At our club there are no limitations on barrel length but all guns must be shot from the shoulder (no pistol grip only guns). The shorter guns are louder but not any worse than some of the longer barrels that are ported IMHO.

Just go about your business, ignore the comments and enjoy yourself.

But at some point you're going to want to hit more targets and a longer barrel and tighter chokes help. Replacement barrels for the 870 Express aren't terribly expensive and reduce the time to that first straight round.

First attempt at shooting trap, all I had with me was a skeet choke tube (in 28 inch barrel). I hit 6 out of 25. Talk about embarassed! Thought I would do much better since I usually did farily well at skeet type shooting. Had a chat with some of the regulars and they suggested I use a full choke. Second time I used a full choke and hit 16. Third time full choke again and hit 21.

I have a buddy who shoots an accasional round of skeet from the hip with a Baikal O/U. Last I checked his record was 17/25

Yeah, your gun is set up better for skeet than trap. But still still not what I would call 'good'. It's really set up for clearing a house, not wingshooting. The barrel is actually too short.

Your best bet is to attend Haggisfest 2006 in July and enter yourself in the tactical shotgun trap shoot! :D Check out the events and gatherings forum.

But stop practicing so much! Some of us only use a .410!

Others, whose name shall not be mentioned but his initials are Woodchopper (oops! did I say that out loud? :p) shoot a 14" pump but don't like to use a bead sight. Hmmmm... come to think of it, GH doesn't use a bead either, does he?

At the range, use your judgment, as discretion is the better part of valor... There's no reason you can't shoot whatever you want, but on the other hand, it wouldn't hurt to keep the peace a little... especially if you want to shoot a lot at this club. Your call.

:)

I've shoot skeet with my 20" mossy folding buttstock before
Some of the guys thought it was funny ,but who cares I don't take myself too seriously and it was alot of fun as well
As long as your having fun don't worry

Just a little something to remember about trapshooting. It's possible to shoot good scores with a short barrel. You can even shoot some decent scores with a .410.But go to any registered trapshooting competition, anywhere, where money and winning is on the line and see if you can find a single shooter(out of about 35,000-40,000 ATA and PITA shooters)who uses a short barrel. You won't find one and that's because trap is basically a long barrel, tight choke game. That's just the way it is.You can use whatever you want and have fun, because having fun is important, but consistent results and high scores result from a combination of things. One thing being a lot of talent, and the other thing is using the right tool for the job.
