So My Stevens 200 .223 came yesterday...

Never own any Savage before and...yup, the stock is UGLY(I mean the finishing)! Needs a lot of work to smooth it for my hands...trigger seems ok and the bolt...absolutely no match with my Tikka T3 SS.

I also found that inside the barrel is dirty as hell, seems Savage guy didn't clean it up after they test-fired it hundred rounds...

Anyone has the same problem when you first receive you Stevens 200?

I never has this problem for any brand new rifle I purchased brfore.

The whole Stevens package is *cheap*

That is why it costs little more than a well used Bubba Enfield.:p

They work OK and shoot very well, but like I keep saying...Accuracy is not the most important component of a Hunting rifle!!:)

To get rid of the molding ridges, take a new single edge razor blade and lightly scrape the flashing. Pretty much disappears. The first batch of grey stocks had a superb finish. These recent black ones aren't so great.

The trigger can be easily lightened. There is a nut where a wire spring goes through, just turn it out and the pull with lighten. Overtravel is an allen bolt at the back of the trigger lever. Just make sure you don't over adjust and negate your safety.

The 'bump' just before the bolt fully opens can be removed. Needs a bit of light machining/polishing in the bolt body. Some quality grease, work the action for about 5 min. and the action runs very smoothly (does need a bit of break in).

From there, bed that action. Makes a huge difference. Clean well BEFORE gouging the plastic. Ensure that the recoil lug is bedded as well. Get rid of that recoil pad (ouch).

These are such an amazing rifle for the money. Once they are cleaned up a bit, shooting them is the icing on the cake. With proper handloads, 1/2 MOA is common and some shoot even better. Not bad for a $320 rifle.

Hard to compare to a product costing 2.5 times as much for refinement. The Tikka should be better but it isn't 2.5 times better.

Now if you were to go spend the difference in aftermarket toys/tuning for the Savage/Stevens, how would it compare then?

Onno, buddy, got you covered.
If you have a hard time with the trigger, I'll do it for you. Bring it with you when we get out turkey hunting... What Misticplayer said about the safety is very important. Check the safety after you adjust the trigger any. And I mean pull HARD with the safety on bet it goes click ;) anytime you adjust it for overtravel, it changes how the safety works, and its important to make sure it still does after you lighten it.

It bet its the most recently bought rifle on this thread. (since it came out)

maybe we should find out how many people have them on here? It would be interesting to know.

I agree, there are so many threads on it. I was about to buy one earlier this week but didn't.

Maybe we should start a poll

.223 last fall--.75" groups--took 20 minutes to clean up stock and adjust trigger.

7mm-08 this spring-haven't shot it yet--20 min to clean up stock and adjust trigger.

Best truck/starter guns out there--just like the old 110 Savages.

The more recent shipments have black stocks? Am I reading this right? Not that I could care. As long as she shoots straight ;) . Hoping my 200 in .223 arrives tomorrow.
