So what "other" kinds of ammo can we put in our SHTF guns, SKS/Mosin/SVT/milsurp

(For discussion purpose only not recommended but may be interesting to find out some new things. Do not load anything but specified calibre ammo into your firearms )

So hypothetically things have run afoul in the world, let's say 1950's style giant lizards have attacked the earth... your out of 7.62x39 and 7.62x54 and 8x57JS

What else can I shoot out of these rifles that has a safety hazard rating where injury is unlikely. Also the expected result.

Let's list for

SKS

Mosin Nagant

SVT

Mauser (8mm)

Other (relavant)

(Again for discussion purposes only, don't try this at home unless of course Giant Lizards)

You'd be better off using the rifle as a club, than using a different caliber in a rifle not designed to use that cal.

It's a recipe for disaster.

There are however adapters for some rifles, such as one allowing you to put 7.62x25 in a 7.62x54R etc.

Iraqivet8888 on YouTube has several "30-30 in a mosin" videos... it worked but the cases split and blew out. I wouldn't hold the rifle to my face.

I have standardizd on .223 with a .22 rimfire kit, as why should I use a .223 on small game anyways, and I would rather have a bunch of rimfire ammo than an empty big bore rifle.

I have three .22 rifles, a .22 handgun, a semi and bolt action in .223.

So to me it's only a rimfire in a .223 rifle, sorry this is not on your list.

Bayonet that all you need when out of ammo

Plenty of YouTube vids on reloading steel cased, berdan primed, lead cast, homemade primer, etc. Put them all together, and...

For SHTF out of ammo situation the Mosin Nagant will handle 30-30 and 308 without any kind of modification, just chamber and fire. One thing is that you going to use cleaning rod to eject spent cases. So keep the bayo off lol as its virtually going to be like muzzle loader. x39 can be fired if you have enough tape on cartridge to give it a rim and chamber against the bolt face.
Forget about other rifles, Injury or damage can occur if you try this with other rifles as none is as versatile in this department as MN.

If you run out, you either didn't store enough, pack enough, your salvaging skills are weak, or you lived longer in the apocalypse than you probably should have.

You done had a good life. Time to let the zombies have your corpse.

:)

People have accidentally fired a variety of cartridges out of arisakas and I've yet to hear of a receiver letting go, though things like extractors were damaged from blow-outs.

Hatcher's notebook is a good read on the subject.
