I just picked up my new Sig P226 Tacops yesterday. It came with 4 mags. The only makings are made in the USA on the side of the mag. I'm wondering what type they are. Pistol was made Dec 2012 according to the cheep cardboard box it came in, WTF !?! 1200 plus tax and no case anymore ??

Not sure what you're looking for here
To ID the mags you have
Brand of extra mags to buy
Or complain about the cheap box you gun came in

Well, if the Question title isn't good enough for ya......i'll try again.

I've read that Mec Gar has been making Sig mags for awhile now. Is there anyway to identify it? How would i know if they are Mec Gar mags?

I'm pretty sure I remember reading somewhere that the mags are made in the USA by a company called Check-Mate.

The Mec-Gar mags will have "Made in Italy" stamped on them...on my SIG mags made by Mec-Gar, they are stamped on the front of the magazine. The sides still say Sig Sauer and the caliber, though.

Thanks.

I remember reading a pile of complaints about the Checkmate mags and that Sig had said they were looking for a new supplier to make their mags. This was a few years ago. I guess they don't feel that good mags are important.

My 226 mags are marked sig sauer P226 9mm on one side and made in USA on the other all steel with steel base plate with US Patent 6.055.758 stamped on it. These mags came with the gun. In a pretty black plastic box!!
All my other mags are MecGar but are stamped made in Italy and have plastic bases to reduce capacity to 10

Have you tried taking the mags apart to see if the follower or inside parts are marked

Same as my USA-made mags. Pretty sure they are the Check-Mate ones. That's what my searching on other forums has revealed, anyway.

No, but thats a good idea.

Looks like the consensus is that the "Made in the USA" mags are crap/garbage/ NFG.

Pretty Black Plastic case eh? .......anyone else see that coming. lol

Are you having a problem with the mags?
I use the original sig mags and MecGar equally without a problem with either
Shooting IPSC and ODPL both get dropped when full and empty without an issue although the plastic MecGar bases are beat up they still work ok.

I use the stock checkmate mags in my P226, never had a problem. What's the specific issue with them?

No Case?? Thats weird - Sig plastic boxes are some if the best.

I just picked it up yesterday. I haven't used the mags yet. I wanted to identify the mags ,as i really didn't want the Checkmate mags due to all the reported propblems.

Never had an issue with either brand. They both seem to work equally well with the SIGs I own. Only thing I can really see is that the Mec-Gars have a better finish to them...maybe comes down to a bit better QC. A couple of my Check-Mate mags had a bit of rust on the springs, and one in particular had excessive build-up of the finish coating at the base of the mag (in the inside), where the mag spring floorplate is pushed in, just before sliding in the mag baseplate. I had to remove the excess coating in order to assemble the mag properly. I know it may sound a bit confusing, but I was a bit surprised...the Mec-Gars for me have always been "plug and play" with zero issues right from the start...again, which may be a simple QC issue, and not a function issue.

Hmm I'm hoping mine doesn't come with checkmates as well. I've been looking around trying to find some Mec-Gars to buy but everyone seems to be out of stock :(.

All the new Sigs come with Checkmate mags (Mec-Gar lost the account a little while ago). I didn't like mine with my 226's, so I bought Mec-Gar's from Numrich and sold the Checkmate's on the EE for a nice chunk of change. The Checkmate's cycled fine but the springs were so tight I could barely load 8 rounds! 9 and 10 made your fingers/thumb bleed. Guy who bought them didn't care. The springs do break in after a while.

Never heard of a Sig pistol not shipping with a hard case, EVER. Sounds like there was a screw-up wherever you bought it from.

I'm pretty sure that Sig does...

Mec-Gar used to and Checkmate does now. Sig doesn't make their own mags for the P226 (or most/all of their US made pistols). Most likely cheaper to farm them out.

I know that CheckMate has been trashed for problems with the SIG mags. However, the company is known for their high quality 1911 magazines. My guess is that they were given the specs for the SIG units or a price point that they had to meet. Maybe it's a better idea to blame the contractor and not the producer?
