So boys and girls has anyone here shot a coyote with a 17hmr? I have a few better calibers (22 hornet, 204, 22-250, etc.) just want to know if you have used it and how it worked. Thanks and merry x-mas.

Yep, two targets of opportunity that came out when I was shooting gophers.
One spun for a bit (head shot) one dropped in its tracks (heart/lung). Both shots around 50 yards.
It won't be my first choice as a coyote rifle but I won't not take a shot if it presents itself.

I killed one at approx 100 yrds. One shot center chest then it turned broadside and I boiler roomed him with a second shot. Dropped dead with that one, make sure to use the 20 gr. bullet.

We have shot a few coyotes with our Hummers... 20 grain XTP's... Recovered them all, but I was not fully happy with the terminal performance (long story short)... Decided that our K-Hornets are the new minimum (for us)...

K-HORNET! What a great round! Also my minimum! But still, i m sure we will read a lot of post with the hmr. This little round is quite suprising. I wonder how my new wmr would perform...

I have a buddy who has used a .22 WMR for more than 30 years for coyotes... inside 100 yards it puts them down... he is a particularly adept coyote hunter and has taken dozens.

I shot two. One was close around 25 yards. It died pretty quick. The other was around 75 yards. After that I decided to leave the 17 HMR for gophers.

I now have shot 7 with mine. All varying distances, none past 125 yards, most under 75yards. 4 head shots, 3 to boiler room. I haven't had one make more then 3 steps, seems to be as potent when used correctly under 125 yards as a .223 would be. nice thing is too, you have to practically squeeze em to find the hole! Nice pelt saver for sure. I think as long as you only take the shots you will make for sure, it should be fine, maybe leaning towards head shots to be sure.

I've used my 22 mag. The 17 rimfire works for head and broadside shots. Not so well on quartering shots past 75 yards. I don't object to anyone using one if they pick their shots

If you want to go to a .17 for coyotes, I would consider the centerfires Mach IV, Fireball, Hornet or Rem...
