Soaking Pistol Barrel in Hoppes #9 ?

Ive got a 9mm pistol barrel that I suspect is badly copper fouled from the tmjs that I have been shooting.

The only stuff I have right now is hoppes #9, is there any problem soaking the barrel in a jar of it for a couple days with the ocassional scubbing with a brush.

Any suggestions of some good quality copper fouling removed/cleaner that I should try next time I get to SIR/Wholesale ?

I'd skip the Hoppes soak, as Hoppes wasn't designed to remove copper fouling anyway. I bought a can of Wipe-Out at the last Kamloops gunshow, and it is designed to remove copper, and does so amazingly well.
 
Soaking anything in Hoppes for an hour will be more than sufficient. Even 15 minutes would be fine, 3 days is pretty extreme... and to fill a jar with hoppes? That is an expensive waste of a good product.

I am also having problems with barrel fouling except it is with a Shueman AET barrel. I was going to do the wipeout thing as well but i got a reply on IPSC global village from a guy that had to change his barrel twice because he did not read what Shueman recomends.

Shueman uses a titanium nitrite coating inside and out of their AET barrels like a ceramic film from what i understand. Anyhow scrubbing and excessive solvents breaks away at the coating and results in decresed barrel life and more fouling. He just saved me a ton of money.

Its good to ask questions i guess

Thanks, I hadn't known that. I may go back to Hoppes then,once the Wipeout is gone. I'm just comfortable with the name, I guess.
Question, does it smell like the original Hoppes?

I'd like to see a pistol barrel that is "worn out". What a load of crap. The barrel will probably outlast the owner on any given pistol. If you wear out a barrel, you can afford to replace it.

You don't need to immerse a handgun barrel in liquid, spray it in and out and run soaked cloth thru it and leave it inside the barrel making sure it is quite wet, for an hour or so.

I know the hoppes #9 isnt the best for the copper fouling, but its all Ive got on hand right now.

What I do is prop a mason jar on edge, put the barrel in pore in just enough to cover it, so it doesnt really use all that much to soak !
 
wipe out

As mentioned that new "Wipe Out" product is pretty amazing stuff. I have used both the aresol and the liquid and although a couple of aplications may be needed, it lifts copper with out a lot of bore scrubbing.
I did a test using my Hawkeye gradient lense to see the progress and I am now a confirmed believer in this stuff.
I wont abandon my electronic Outers foul out system just yet, but this wipe out is worth a try if you have not allready got some. David.
 
Hoppes #9 will remove copper, but it does take somewhat longer than the specific copper removal solvents. I've cleaned a lot of old enfields .303's with regular hoppes and the green gravy pours out of the muzzle.But it does take some time and elbow grease. If your buying a new solvent , get the copper specific cleaners.IMHO

I use Hoppes Benchrest at the range occasionally, and although it is good, it is nowhere near as good as wipeout.

Wipeout will not hurt the barrel like the high ammonia type cleaners will, and it simply works wonders...

The active ingredient in most if not all copper removing formulations is Ammonia. Just go to your local store and buy some household ammonia. It will remove copper like nothing and it won't harm steel!!! Cheap too

X2 - nothing desolves the copper faster than household ammonia.
Just remember to rince in really hot water, dry, and oil after you get rid of the copper.
