I have heard about brass bulging but has anyone had the lead bullets bulge on them?

I am loading for a 25 Stevens, so no true reloading die. I am using a 25 ACP die, when I seated the bullets last night they bumped out from .251 to about .258, these are soft lead and a compressed BP load, not sure why this is happening.

I do not know if this is safe, a 7 thou over bullet in an old rimfire.

A soft lead bullet is very easily deformed by compressing black powder. I made a few
535 grain Postells into unchamberable roundnose learning that.

See what you can rig up for an compression die.

I noticed I can use the bullet sizing die to grab on to the deformed bullet and pull it, I will try pulling them and seating another on top of that compressed powder.

Maybe just a section of rod turned down to .251 will work as a compression die.

I have a couple different compression plugs that fit into a Lee's expander die which works pretty well.
If you want to go simple a 1/4" rod turned down with a file and drill then cut just a little longer than the bullet should work.

Glad to hear you are getting close to taking this project to the range with new ammo. Should be very satisfying after all the work getting to this point.

I just used a .224 bullet and compressed the powder as best I could. I took it to the range, you need multiple strikes on the primer as this old Cooey does not have a strong spring.

I need to find some FFFFg, the factory ammo, even 50 years old went bang, all 8 rounds I shot. I think my Chronograph was too close, I had shots varying 400fps from the factory ammo but the shots all hit within 2" at 25 yards with the original Cooey iron sights, which are horrible.

My loads varied like crazy as well but hit pretty much the same POI as the 25 Short and 25 Long, the bulged bullets did fine too, no real change in velocity.

I am going to run through a detailed run down of my loads and what I did with pictures but I need to get a new picture host as Photobucket sucks now, I am also busy as heck, so it may be a week or two.

Keep your eyes on the Rimfire Forum if you are interested, I call this round the 25 Stevens Intermediate.
