Soft Shooting Range Bag ?

Hi,

I have seen "shooting range" bags for sale online (like at Marstar for example) that apparently have separate lockable pouches for both pistols and ammunition, plus all kinds of other storage space for glasses, hearing protection etc etc.

These look very useful in that you can take your pistols and everything you need in one bag...but.....what I am wondering....is this a legal way to transport restricted firearms ? does a soft carrying case with locks on it meet the transport requirements ?

The appeal is the convenience of "one" bag with everything in it...plus the lightweight.

The reason I am in doubt is because anyone could just "cut it open" with a knife and have easy access to the firearms regardless of the locks on it.

I saw one fellow at the range carrying one of these..and seems like a good idea...but I would appreciate your comments/advice.

OK...I guess I should have read the regulations before I posted my question : )

"Lock the firearms in a sturdy, non-transparent container;" which clearly a soft shooting range bag is not..so I guess they are out in Canada. I have seen a couple guys with these....but guess they are not in compliance.
 
As long as the pistols are trigger locked, and the case/range bag is locked up i don't see why not.
The regulations do not specify wether you require a "hard" case over a "soft" case.
 
Thanks Joe. I guess I am just wondering if a range bag could be considered "sturdy" which is mentioned in the act on storage for transport ?
 
Most guys I've seen use them still have their pistols in a locked case inside the range bag. This, I believe, satisfies the requirements as long as the ammo is also locked in a container of some sort.
 
Hard to break into is hard to break into. As of yet undefined by the courts for that specific context. My personal definition is childproof and locked. A knife is probably all you need to open a plastic case too.
 
For my range bag i looked online forever until one evening after a cigarette i came inside and noticed a black duffel sitting in the back hallway , sure enough it was a spare bowling ball bag .

has 4 or 5 lockable compartments fits a 30ml ammo can , my binos , ammunition , spare locks . quite happy has range bags can get quite expensive.
 
"...range bags can get quite expensive..." Yep. Anything made specifically for firearms or, worse, with a firearms maker's logo costs more. A bowling ball bag much less?

A soft side case that has the zipper locked is fine. The ammo never has to be locked up for transport, separate case or not.

OP, I use a Kuny tool bag for my range bag, it was $30 at my local Totem and is built very sturdy to handle the weight of tools. It usually weighs 40-50lbs once loaded with ammo and supplies and carries it with no problems.

Where are you planning on leaving your range bag?

Pretty much anything other than a paper bag meets the so called requirements of 'sturdy, non-transparent container'.

But each to their own, whatever you feel comfortable with.....
 
Thanks so much for the feedback guys...it sounds like soft & locked is OK...which is good news ! The range bag would always be with me or in the trunk.
 
Right now I'm using a napsack. Multiple pouches, lots of room, easy to carry, hands free and if you had the desire you can lock all the zippers together for some sense of child-proofing rather than any sort of protection.

Depends on what kind , i havnt seen them higher than 80 brand new but my Dad bowls professionally and he comes home with free stuff all the time so i just yoinked it .
 
I just got a glock range bag and was wondering if I can legally use it. I'm assuming it's legal since I can lock it up and it's a sturdy heavy material. but Im still a little unclear with transporting ammo. If my pistols are trigger-locked inside the locked range bag, can my ammo be in there with them as well? Or can I put my ammo in a side pocket of the range bag that also locks? or do I have to keep the ammo in a different locked container separated from my range bag? I tried to call the Chief Arms Officer with these questions but didn't get through. I'd really like someone in the RCMP to tell me my range bag is OK to use lol before I get charged with a felony.
