Softpoint .223 in a black rifle....

Dont get the Ranger 64 gr stuff;) Was getting 2+moa with it and the points were getting damaged during chambering (eject a live shell and the tip was fubar). Used some cheap 55gr AE and the best group of the day was .679moa (5 rds at 100yds). Ranger ammo is junk! Feeds and runs no worries just not very accurate!

pretty sure its primary choice of allot of police services. Shoots great thru my HBAR, and really accurate especially since the tips are generally misshaped.

In your rifle. My 16" mid-length shoots it into less than an inch all day long and it was designed to shoot deer-sized animals (like people) so it works more like a game bullet than a varmint bullet. Take a look at what Dr. Garry Roberts says about it sometime...

PSP is a may/may not issue in a lot of AR's.

Most manufacturers do not recommend then (like us at KAC) , for reliability isues. however a lot of departments do issue them.

Mine will always work with it (Ranger 64gr) just not very accurate even against the cheap AE stuff. It is for a different purpose than precision in my books. Tried it in my 11.5" upper and my 20" bolt gun too and it suffered the same fate (less accurate). Still a reliable ammo but just not very accurate. I did still place 3rd in a pin match using the stuff so its not that bad;)

Outside of the exotics (SOST or BrownTip) which are not commercially available, they offer good perfromance for LE Duty requirements.

They work well in penetration, and thru barriers (windshields, car doors etc.)

To be fair and in the interest of full disclosure - it is much less accurate in my 12.5" (2-3"). What kind of velocity is the Brown Tip loaded to? I have several hundred Barnes TSX 70 gr that I'd like to try (and yes, I do have a chrono)...

I only have one 12.5" SR-16, but if you really really want I will go out and chrono it with the Black-Hills Brown Tip. ;)
I had a 14.5" cut down so I can use a can and M203, of course it never went anywhere so it sits in my room of extra stuff at work.

ALL the PSP we have tested is less accurate, the Aussie Federal Police load is a 55gr Federal PSP, and it functions, but it is 2-3MOA ammo (off the bench in a gun that just shot subMOA with the Brown Tip).

If I knew what it did in a 16" that would be cool :cool:as that's what I'm doing load development in. I'm seriously considering a 14.5" mid-length, not for any reason other than looks since you can get more of the barrel covered with a free-float forend (I'm thinking maybe a 13"-er...)...:D

I do have to say that after firing an SR15 IWS I'm about ready to quit playing around with the builds and just pony up for one - unbelievably sweet!!!
