After searching and reading a lot of info all over, I am still not really sure of anything except that it is almost time to get an AR.

Choices abound, and everyone seems to have an opinion on what suits them best and which manufacturer produces the nicest product.

You can spend as much or as little as you want, it seems, and in umpteen configurations. No wonder many end up with more than one!

I'm thinking of a reasonable quality "starter" AR, if there is such a thing, to cut my eyeteeth on, and start learning hands on. You can only learn so much from reading.

So, let's hear some discussion - what do you all think of, for example, one of the package deals from Questar (above sponsor).... the RRA or LMT units? Which would you choose and why?

For general range shooting, or SHTF, or future rifle match use:

1:9 twist, or 1:7?
What length bbl?
What other accessories should be added?

Popcan,
You need to identify your purpose(s) before you decide on anything. Lay out some criteria you would like or dislike. With this info it will be easier for both you as well as other CGN member to make recommendations.

Well, being restricted to the range, I would use it for targets, and I would do that with and without a scope... in other words, have the option to use iron sights, or use different types of optics.. scope or red dot, etc. 100 - 300 yds.

Maybe get involved in rifle matches down the road.

If longer range accuracy is a concern I'd want a minimum 14.5" flattop with 1/9 twist. Brand is subjective, most mainstream manufacturers produce a pretty good gun. If accuracy is the most important factor I'd choose a 20" bbl. with a scope, if WTSHTF CQB is very high on the list then an 11.5" with an EOTech would be my choice.:D

If you think you will get into service rifle down the road get a 16" or longer barrel.

I recommend 1:7 twist so you can use the heavier (and longer) bullets)

I prefer 16" midlengths - but other than KAC, and custom guns CMMG is the only one who makes a middy 16" 1:7 barrel - Walt at ARMSEAST does CMMG

If you dont want to shoot heavier bullets Armalite has a 16" 1:9 midlenth

For 14.5 and shorter guns go LMT IMHO.

I've also been planning on an AR15 purchase. One thing to keep in mind is if you want to go south of the border for matches (with more than 10 round mags :) ) that you will have to have at least a 16" barrel. And for me, keeping reloading costs down is more important than super long range shooting so I would want to shoot the lighter bullets so would go with just a 9" twist if I could.

I'll be buying as soon as I see the importers (who ever is first) dropping the prices significantly to match the Canadian to US dollar exchange rates that have changed over the last year or so.

A 1:7 twist barrel will shoot pretty much every .224 bullet under the sun, and if you are buying and shooting bulk bullets, the least expensive bullets are likely to be 55 grain. Why sell yourself short with a 1:9?

Yes, you are right Beltfed. 55 gr. are the lowest cost. Guess I was thinking about some of the lighter 40 and 45 gr. bullets that I have been using in a 223 Remington bolt gun. 7" twist for these light hunting bullets would be way too fast for them. So I guess I want a fast 7" twist now.

Some what old thread but...

Popcan, did you find/buy a gun?

Which brands have easy to remove threaded flashhiders so I can put on a threaded brake?

I would like a threaded barrel with a real barrel length of 16" so I can take it south to the states for matches. (ie. I don't want a 14.5" with a permanent 1.5" hider.)

Didn't I see a chart comparing brand features somewhere?

For the price I would recommend Stag and Armalite, 16", preferably 1:7 but 1:9 is also excellent.

For general range shooting + SHTF (because you should train with what you would have to use for a SHTF scenario) :

Vortex Flash Hider
FF railed handguards (Samson, Troy, Daniel Defence)
GG&G Bipod (Really great!)
TD VFG
(for SHTF you could add a flash light with remote pad : Surefire is great)
TA31F Acog with LaRue mount
BUIS (I have a Troy and I like it. The GG&G MAD seems nice too)
Enhanced trigger guard
New grip (I have the Falcon Ergo grip and I love it)
New stock for with cheek weld posibility (I have the Vltor Clubfoot and I love it)

and lotsssssss of ammo!!!

For match use, get another AR! 20" heavy barrel, Leupy-nightforce-USO scope, FF hanguard, bipod, PRS Stock, etc...

Hope it helps... take care!

AR choice

Well unless you want it right away.If I were to get my first AR again, I would go with the LWRC piston AR.

Thanks for the ideas and advice guys........

This is what I ended up with:

14.5" LMT, CTR stock from Robstar, and FF Samson handguards thanks to Canucklehead.

Still undecided on optics... to magnify or not etc. Opinions?

Nice Popcan, check out the Magpul MIAD grip if you're thinking about replacing the LMT ergo grip.

I'm thinking of doing up my 14.5 very similar to that... or a 9" rail, not sure yet :D

Not true anymore. Saber Defence line of rifles (including barrels under 16" :D) and as I was browsing the catalog I saw that they make a 16" Mid Length 1/7 which is what I am having brought in for myself.

I stole this from there product list PDF found here.

Mid-Length Flat-Top Carbine Upper Assembly
Upper Assembly includes bolt carrier assembly & charging handle

16” Barrel, 1:7 Twist, Chrome Lined
40013. $899.00 msrp

I'll post a review when I get mine.

Who carries them? What is the wait? How much?

What's "FF" and "TD VFG"?

Which brands have easy to remove threaded flashhiders so I can put on a threaded brake?

Didn't I see a chart comparing brand features somewhere?

I was looking at Arms East (site sponsor) for the Stag 2T with the forward rails but they don't have any and guess it is out of production.

Fudd

FF = Free Floating

TD VFG = Tango Down Vertical Front Grip

Which brands... threaded flashhiders...? = It doesn't depend on the brand. There are threaded barrels and non-threaded barrels. NORMALY barrels with flash hiders should be threaded unless it is stated that they are post-ban models.
