Anyone ever see this fine shooter shooting skeet
Barny Hartman

some pretty good streak maybe it has been beat ?

Barney Hartman, skeet shooter (b at Swan River, Man 2 Nov 1916). Judged by his peers the greatest skeet shooter in the world, Hartman was 10 times captain of the National Skeet Shooting Association all-American team and 4 times recorded perfect 100 x 100 with the 410 gauge. He claimed nearly 30 world titles in 12, 20, 28, 410 gauge and all-round categories. He once broke a string of 2002 clay targets without a miss and he frequently shattered records. He won a silver and 4 bronze medals in world competition and for 9 of 12 years as amateur and professional boasted the world's best average.

Had the privelege of watching & shooting with Barney a few times in the late 60's and early 70's, and yes, he was a very good shooter back in the day, establishing quite a few early records. ... "Mr. Consistancy".

We exchanged Remington 58's for a round once, and I did have the opportunity of trying his Winchester Model 42 .410 with the over-barrel ( which a friend now owns and has since restored/upgraded). Interesting: Barney's ammunition was all factory- coded "BH" on the C.I.L. boxes. I do know he favoured 3 dram equivalent 1-1/8 oz. loads of No. 9's in 12 gauge ... and recommended a choke that would produce a nice even 70-75 percent pattern in a 30" circle at exactly 21yards from the muzzle.

I'm fairly certain all of Barney's amateur records have since been eclipsed, however some of the "Industry" classification records he established while working for C.I.L.
may well still stand.

His book "Hartman on Skeet" (long out of print) remains a good read, if
you can find a copy. ( He did say though, that he had re-thought the foot positions recommended in the book shortly after it was printed, and actually used [and taught]something a little different ! )

Besides being an extraordinary shot, I recall Barney as being a good coach and
very much a gentleman.

Barney finished shooting long before I got involved with skeet. Unfortunately I never got to see him shoot. He did present me with my first 100x100 patch (I wish I could find the picture). He often can be found visiting the skeet club at Connaught during the annual Capital of Canada Skeet Championships (long weekend in May).

Barney came to Labrador for a clinic in the late 70's. I learned a lot and enjoyed shooting with him. He used Bill Giblin's 1100 12ga. and then he tried mine for a few rounds. He absolutely SMOKED every target thrown that weekend. A great coach and a fine gentleman.

Yes .. Barney's 410 was a Winchester 42 with an over-barrel, I believe installed
by Ken Sedleckey (sp) an accomplished upstate NY shooter/smith, IIRC.

His 20 was a Browning Superposed, with Purbaugh tubes for 28.

His 12's were Remington 58's.

I believe he said he learned to shoot Skeet while stationed in Labrador with the
Canadian Forces ... first with a Model 12 with a Cutt's compensator.
