Some help for a scope newbie please?

So, I am just getting into rifles and have a nice 223 on the way and want to top it off with a decent scope. I say "decent" meaning the best I can get for $300 or so(blew my budget on the rifle).
The gun is for range use only - shooting out to 100 yards. I know that a 3-9 will likely do, but I would like to have something with a little higher magnification(my eyes are not great). I have been doing lots of research on the forum, but am only becoming more confused.
Unfortunately I don't have the luxury of going to a local gun store to view a variety of scopes and see what is best. Locally we have one newly opened gun store(the only one for 300km) and they have three vortex scopes in stock - one is a diamonback 4-12x40 but I am not sure about them.
Anyway, I was hoping that someone out there may be able to provide some suggestions on a scope, and maybe even the best places to purchase them. Thanks!
 
From everything I've read, Vortex are great scopes. I plan on getting one to try out soon.

Damned hard typing on a laptop with a pug on my lap and his head on the keyboard. And his snoring is drowning making the TV hard to hear. If he wasn't such a great guard dog...
 
Good news. The recoil of a .223 won't pound a scope to bits. And you don't need a lot of magnification at 100 yards. There are lots of good choices under $300. I think 3-9x40 will be plenty of magnification (actually, I think a fixed 4x will be enough, but it's your money and you should get what you want.) The Bushnell Elites are good scopes and the 3200 series is going out of production so they are being discounted by a lot of dealers. The current production Weavers are quite good and widely underappreciated. The new Redfields since Leupold took them over very good value for money and the lifetime warranty is better than most lifetime warranties because it isn't limited to the original retail purchaser. The Vortex range also include some useful choices in your price range and lots of gunnutz speak highly of them.
 
I would stay away from crapnell elites. I compared one to my diamond back and I was much more pleased with the clarity of the glass on the Vortex. I also have a Viper 6.5-20x50 and am very happy with that scope. I also believe Vortex warranty to be one of the better one's on the market right now.
 
223s makes small holes that requires good eyes to see at 100m at 9x. 30-06 holes with a 10x at 100m is OK with normal eyes.

Go for 20x for poor eyes.

My 223 sports a Sightron S3 8-32x56mm, holes are very clear. Take a look at Sightron S2 line.
 
All the way Redfield Revolution 4X12X40 regular duplex under 250.00 and will last you a lifetime, cristal clear scope... JP.
 
I read a scope comparison on an optics site a while back where the diamondback was the top choice between it and 4 or 5 similar priced scopes. That with the warranty Vortex provides is good enough for me. Only negative I've heard on the Vortex is about eye relief which would be of no consequence with a 223.
 
i have a savage light weight varmiter and a bushnell 3200 bone colletor scope 3x4x40 it works great one piece of advice BUY GOOD RINGS like the leupold steel tacticals stay away from the cheap aluminum ones!!!!!
 
go with the Vortex, the 4-12diamondback is a nice optic, best warranty around - IF - you ever needed it. scope value and options for the dollar beats a ushnell anything hands down.
