I've recently been amazed at how simple the design of some firearms really are. Sometimes it almost makes me wish I was a gunsmith or at all skilled with metal fabrication.

What are some variants of 50 caliber rifles throughout history that have been very simple in design?

Single shot bolt actions are about as simple as a .50 gets. Rest assured that they are not nearly as simple as they look. Trigger assemblies and bolts are not easy to design or piece together. Also, the exact tolerances needed make these rifles a lot more complex, and hard to fabricate, than they may look.

What kind of .50's are you talking about? My .50 cal caplock muzzleloader is pretty simple. So are the various early cartridge actions - Sharps 1863 conversions and 1874's, Rolling Blocks, Trapdoors and other falling, swinging, and tilting block designs offered in .50-70 or something similar.

Simplist .50 BMG rifle I'd say is the L.A.R. Grizzly.
