Hi all. I want to buy a black powder rifle soon but I really don't know anything about this but it look really fun to shoot. I just have some question and I think it's the best place to ask them so:

About the powder, once placed in the rifle, is there good chance for the powder to get moisture when it's raining or with new BP it's negligible chance.

About the accuracy, does the accuracy compare to slug from a shotgun 12 gage or is it better , something like smokeless rifle except with limited range.

finally what do I need to start shooting BP other than the rifle and a good manual.

thanks for any reference of infos
Gab

I would read up on it for starters, there are many cautions. As for the powder getting wet , tape the end of the barrel, but not a must, accuracy can be awesome. Range 150 meters with a scoped inline, 100 and under for everything else. You will need powder, caps, balls, or bullets, patches/sabbots, measure, lube, ball starter, bullet puller, good ramrod, T/C is fine, a manual to learn about grades of powder ,loading procedures(seat, seat the ball, lol)

thank you
and about power
what's the max range to kill the average
moose
deer
bear
I don't want exact answer, but just to get an idea , since I hunt mostly with shotgun /slug
Thank you

Relative to water; nothing gets in from the front once it is loaded because the ball is patched and if you are hunting, the lube is an oil or grease. From the back if you put a feather in the flash hole, it keeps the moisture out. A capped percussion gun is sealed by definition. Your greatest concern with a flinter is that if you have already fired a shot, the fouling is very hydroscopic and it pays to wipe the pan clean and to plug the flash hole until needed
If it is raining and you are wearing a brimmed hat, be careful not to look down at your caps while capping. All the water comes running forward right into the cap tin or onto the capper :>(
For accuracy you should get 2" group at 50 yds or better and relative to hunting be advised that you will not get a large wide wound channel with a round ball like you do with a modern slug. Just a long straight line more like an arrow wound.

so the killing power if I can say this, is more like an arrow than a slug?
good
thank you for all infos, I can't wait to get my rifle, btw I ordered a lyman deerstalker, lyman black powder manual for now.
As for cleaning tools and usual loading tools, what do I need? is there everything included with the gun to charge and clean the canon?
Thanks!

killing power / fer hunting deer minimum 45 cal, but bigger is better, more like a shotgun slug than arrow, average standard is 50 cal, but i hunt with a 58 cal, ball or bullet , my opnion bullet is better fer hunting,
keep shots under 100 yards, an practise--practise -practise. then practise A LITTLE MORE!
when you can hit say, a 8 inch paper plate at 75-to 100 yards consistantly from any hunting shooting position, ( kneelin /standing /sitting, ) supported or unsupported. you , in my opinion, would be ready.
you get 1 shot, to anchore /put down your game. it gotta count.
NO FUN CHASIN A BADLY WOUNDED animal or losin it / waisting it.
