Somebody in Ottawa bought a No.4T (T for Turd)

Was at the Eganville show on the first morning, where I spotted a No.4T in "turdish" condition. It was not imediately obvious as a T. The short wood painted a lovely shade of gloss brown made it blend into the table top. The MkIII scope and cheekrest gave it away. It was a genuine T receiver, 1944 BSA M47C with a G###xx serial number, but it needed a foreend, top wood and a front sight guard, and new bands. Some parts (safety and swivels) had been burnished to a glorious pale red tone. I looked it over and passed, neither condition or price were interesting.

An hour or so later I did a second pass. Rifle sold "to some one in Ottawa". He paid the asking price - $2800.00. A new low in the sucker market (or should that be high?).

If the numbers were matching, and it had the chest, sling, and scope case, then it was not too far out of whack. The missing wood can be had for around $100, or could be salvaged from a donor rifle.
It also depends on the condition of the scope too; did the turrets still turn and click?
Prices on these things are spiraling out of control. Someone sells a minty one for $2500, so someone figures there POS is worth the same. So the next minty one goes for $3000, at which time someone else with a POS figures his is now worth $3000, so the next minty one goes for $3500......well you can see where this goes.

Iv'e always said that if you don't like the price of this kind of stuff; look back in a year and you'll dream about them at this price. It wasn't that many years ago you could buy all matching and complete Ts for under $1000.

I said the same thing; somebody saw the price of a good one on the internet, and priced this POS the same. Mr. My-Wallet-Is-Too-Full stumbles onto his first ever T within his grasp and falls all over himself to get it. Oh well, not my problem but he has to find $200 in parts, and hope the next buyer is as excited as he was.

The turrets did turn one or two clicks in my fingers. The old blackening and patina on the brass scales had been Brasso'ed up so it was nice and shiney. No case, no chest, no sling. Just a naked brown painted rifle with reddish toned removeables. All the lettering was filled in with white, so you could read every stamp. A sin if there ever was one.

There was something wrong with even acknowledging poor taste. Almost as basic as not standing for Oh Canada. The seller knew exactly what he had, and probably wonders now if he could have asked another $500. He even spoke reverently about the last owner, although I really wonder how he could have slept tonight with the things he said.

Eganville: 45 deg 32 min 22 sec N, 77 deg 05 min 17 sec W. Just SW of Pembroke and Petawawa. Saw four sand brown Mineproofed Vehicles (on low boys), dozens of G-Wagons, MiliCots and MLVWs on the road. Pretty countryside.

When someone just has to have one it is surprising what one is willing to pay. Complete kits are getting really hard to find even at unreasonable prices.

The sand vehicles are South African Nyalla's.

There is an exercise going on for the 2 RCHA.

Whats the sum of the parts worth on that one?
Like arn't only the scopes without mounts pushing over $800 USD?
Original Mounts - Big Bucks too???

Maybe the guy who bought it needed parts for another rifle.

$2800 =

If disposed of:
ebay US$1000 scope
ebay US$500 for mount and pads
ebay cheekrest US$100
junker receiver with desirable markings C$300

(still doesn't add up to C$2800)

Needed to restore (all matched to a 1944 BSA):
foreend, rear handguard, front handguard, middle band, front band, front swivel, front sight guard, front sight guard screw, King Screw sling loop, rear swivel, safety (and a few other parts I might have missed). Paint stripper and boiled linseed oil.

With a donor rifle, he is still behind by my math. And he'll still have a restored No.4(T).

A good education allows one to read! ;)

Having a good nights sleep instead of sitting on the computer all night also helps.

I'm going to stamp a "T"in my bubba Enfield and see if I can get $2,800 for it on the EE. :p (kidding)

That's odd, I saw those same Nyala's on the lowboys at around 11:00 just inside of the Quebec border heading east. Guess they were on their way to Gagetown.

I was heading to Higginson's in Hawksbury, ON.
