Hey folks, I was wondering if anyone could suggest some good literature for someone interested in gunsmithing. Im not looking to open a business, or anything of that scale, more just looking to expand my knowledge.

Introduction textbooks, encyclopedias, Idiots guide to(haha) I'm open to any suggestions... title and author would be ideal :)

Ive tried browsing book stores locally, looked briefly the last time I was allowed in a store before the nonsense, but never saw anything really.

Thanks in advance guys.

Howe's Modern Gunsmithing.

And keep in mind that 'modern' was about 1929 or so...

But the Mauser 98 is from 30 years earlier!

Hatcher's Notebook. Interesting read too.

Do keep in mind that on average, the books that are out there were mostly written at a time when small town hardware stores and mail order catalogs were full of incredibly inexpensive fodder for conversion and sporterizing, and the average factory rifle did around two inches at a hundred yards out of the box.

That was a long time ago!

Hatchers Notebook. If you havent read it you have yet to become completely informed about firearms.

I think it really depends on your interests. Are you interested in stock making? Actual machine work? Project ideas? Etc.

Honestly, Im just looking for a new topic. I figured Id start with the basics, a 101 type idea, and go from there if I found a direction that I was interested in, or just keep reading general information heh

There are a couple books by Steve Acker (the gunsmith machinist) which I enjoyed - a lot of good information to get you started. He wrote for several machining magazines and knows how to teach so they are easy to understand. These books are primarily to do with metal working.

If you would rather start in wood working, professional stock making by Wesbrook is the best one I’ve found but still leaves some questions unanswered in my opinion.
