Something I dont understand...

WMU 526 in Alberta gave out 4 mule deer doe tags to any hunter that wanted them this year. you just had to call the "draw line" and put in your WIN number.i checked the website on November 3 and they still had 293 sets of tags left......Nobody bothers shooting doe mulies. We see herds of 60 or more in one field daily.....they stand on the road and watch you drive by

Shot many a fine doe way down in the valley only to walk up to it and find it to be a spiker. Still young meats good meat as long as the deer population is healthy... which is almost everywhere.

I made it a plan this year to only shoot whitetail yearlings and save the general tag for last or a big buck. Well as it turns out no big buck so 3 yearlings. I passes on a Doe , she had 2 yearlings but I couldn't get a clear shot on either yearling, well not without shooting thru the doe, and I really contemplated going for a twofer :) I had the 300WM that day and it was only about 25yds but I passes, lots of deer where I'm hunting.

and yearlings make good eating :)

the strip loins are awfull small, you really have to cook 2 to get a good feed.

In terms of conservation, shooting the little one is more efficient because the "big ones" do the majority of the breeding anyway. Take the little ones out and leave the breeders to 'conserve the herds"

In terms of hunting, hell if its legal and it matches up with your ethics, then there's no issue.

Now that I said that, I've taken a spike and it was great meat but I have to admit I have rackitis (in more ways than one) and I like taking out the big guys when I have time. When I don't the first one on the cross hairs gets invited home for dinner.

I cant for the life of me figure out why some deer hunters shoot spikers. Why not shoot a doe? Is it so you can, say you got a buck?

Around here we have alote of does running around, and the buck situation is starting to thin out, even the spikers. Sure we still have some nice 5 pointers around, but if we got people keep shooting the spikers, what going to replace the big ones in 5 years?
I dunno, maybe I am way off base here. It just seem logical to me.

doe is on LEH here. spiker = good meat in the freezer.

plus, way back when, i shot a doe that turned out to be a spike buck. the LEH tags here say "antlerless or spike buck".
