Found this site accidentally via youtube, and after spending a hour and a half reading i can foresee myself spending many more hours simply reading the vast amount of information on here.

After recently turning 18, i mailed off my non restricted and restricted PAL papers a few days ago. Being 18, while in grade 12, and with plans of jumping straight into college after, my budget for firearms is not as great as i would like it to be. So my plans are to get a SKS and was looking at the tokarev. Both choices was simply because they seem to be cheap to get, and the ammo is also cheap allowing me to be able to afford to fire it.

Im hearing mixed reviews on it, but i may look into the folding stock for the sks (assuming i buy one) allowing easier transportation of it while im out quading in the back 40. With that said, i love quading, my Grizzly 660 (riding or fixing...) takes up all my spare time. Exploring and mudding, its all fun. While out quading i prefer to bring a rifle with me for two reason, fun while stopped taking a break, and protection from the rare chance of a bear attack. Due to how i like to take on the deepest mud hole i can find, having a cheap gun like the sks would also put my mind at ease if i swamp my grizz or roll it down a hill.

Being on a budget, my plan is probably to build a wooden safe, or just get one of them tin can "14" gun safes from Canadian tire for like $180.

With my very limited knowledge on firearms, i probably wont be posting much other than asking nooby questions, so please bear with me as i learn.

Forgot to mention, also Albertan.

"...While out quading..." Hi. No loaded firearms in or on any motor vehicle. Slung or in a rifle boot and stripper clips will take care of that. In the highly unlikely event that you startle Yogi(he'll avoid your noisy machine like the plague), be aware how fast a bear can move. A big griz can run at 35 mph. Use the throttle.
"...having a cheap gun like the sks..." Yep. Hose it down, then clean as per normal. Mind you, the 7.62 x 39 isn't good bear medicine.

Welcome rob350. If you do lots of mudding on your quad you might want to tape a condom over the muzzle of your SKS to keep the mud out. Saves blowing the barrel and maybe some fingers and other parts you might need. Lots of friendly folks here and info.

Thanks for the info, i may just put a piece of duct tape over it.

Yeah, so far they have all ran, but i want to have something available to attempt to stop a bear when my luck runs out. Im not putting my life in the hands of trusting that he will run every time, what if its between momma and the cubs.
I hear ya on just gassing it, but in allot of the trails i probably wont get anymore than 10-15 mph if im lucky, so i want my options open. Also what if im stuck at the time, or hung up on a tree.

Thanks, i have looked at a couple of them already. Too much on this site to read in only a couple days, going to take a while to get through it all!
