Well I love my 91/30, it's got an action that drops open and it shoots well but trying to load a stripper clip and cycle the action? That's a completely different story...I'd like to use this for hunting but if I'm going to manually load it single shot every time...

That's what everyone else does with their hunting rifles. Planning on missing all 5 and needing more? ;)

I found the 7.62x54 heavy ball that came on strippers didn't fit my Polish M44. The strippers were physically too wide to fit in the charger guide.

I find with my fin m91 I have allot better luck on running shots, I take my time, because I know i can't cycle that action wile keeping on target like a regualr bolt gun. A single shot is usualy all thats needed. I just feed each cartrige into the mag seperately... I only put 4 in it, close the action on an empty chamber... as there is no real safty. 3 of the 4 deer(and one coyote) I killed this year(with my m91) were running, 2 were one shot kills... the other one I shot again to be sure.

Maybe your not loading the ammo properly onto the stripper clip. Its one rim under, one rim over, one rim under.... Your forgetting its a rimmed cartridge.

Thanks for all the replies. As for hunting, you guys are right, if you can't hit it in one shot then you should be practicing at the range first, but it's just such a huge pain in the rear to load with a stripper clip (sometimes it doesn't fit, the rounds won't load, etc.). I'll try loading them one at a time, and I'll try the "over, under, over" method that Scarecrow mentioned (thanks!).

If you load them one at a time, the rule is to put the next round's rim in front of the cartridge already in the mag and push down and to the rear.
When I shoot a straight-handled Mosin from a rest, I reach over the action with my left hand to open and close the bolt. That way, I can apply a better torque on the handle because my right hand doesn't leave the grip and the butt is still held tightly against my shoulder.
Mind you, it will never match the reloading speed of an Enfield but it is fast.

Thanks! Well if you can shoot well, who needs to reload faster than an Enfield? I reach over as well, but as soon as I get the turned down bolt I won't have that problem anymore.

I use my right hand and have never had a problem with any mosin(reaching over sounds silly)... And if you think you can't be quick... Just wait till something spooks ya. I was walking in a small wooded area and some deer came crashing through about 15yards away.. I was carying my m91 decocked on an empty chamber... It took me about 1/10th of a second to open and chamber a round lol.

But I grip the bolt differnt than a regular bolt action. I grab it with my pinky finger side of my hand, palm up, ball in my palm at about the second finger in. Try that if you can comprehend what im trying to get across.

I think I'll try that. So instead of grabbing the bolt with the thumb and first two fingers, you grab the bolt with your hand facing up?

Hand facing up

Yes, that's what I do standing up, like any other bolt action and especially Lee-Enfields and Swedes. With the Mosin, this gives you the option of slapping up on the ball.
When I'm on a rest or at the bench and I don't want to change my position, I use the other method.
