Got a approx. 1925-30 Mauser it has the full mannlicher stock "new" not original. cartridge is 30-06 it has double triggers, iron sights with the fold up 100 200 300 leafs
Anyway I like this gun would like to hunt more with it, however the iron sights have n\made it my carry thru the bush gun, hey it has a 18" barrel so it cqrries easy
So should I install a scope and will this afffect the value and how much?
The gun has been in the family for 50 yrs. my father bought it off an Inuit hunter back in the 50's, stock was cracked then.
Any suggestions appreciated

Well here's my $0.02...Since you are going to use it as a "work" gun, go ahead and drill/tap for scope mounts. It sounds like it's a commercial Mauser or sporterized military Mauser. As a collectible, it probably has minimal value over the value of any other used commercial hunting rifle.

It would help to know more details about your guns manufacture , details etc. Sometime these guns can be valuable. post the details here and you might find out something about your gun.

I believe the rifle was built say 1930's
It has Waffenfabrik Mauser - Obernddrf markings
Also, ihas US 1906
#873**
On the barell just below the leaf sights #873** 7.6S

has matching numbers on top of butter knife style bolt handle and has the last 2 number digits on top ot three position safety.
Any more ifo. just ask

Do you have access to a digital camera so that you can post a pic? It sounds like a commercial mauser rifle, these have collectors value. If the rifle is in good shape you might consider leaving it alone, if in the other hand this will be a working rifle a scope might be mountable, I say this because butterknife bolt handles have a high lift and a low mounted scope is often impossible to mount, you might have to install a very high ring set in order to allow the bolt handle to clear or replace the handle, usually the actions were not slotted at the rear for the handle and the handle was bent to clear the sides of the action creating a very large arc when lifting the bolt handle.

Mauser 98

Wilson:

I would do a thorough research on that rifle before you modify it. It may have significant value to a collector and any holes that aren't original will devalue it greatly.

There are some pretty knowledgeable 98 afficionados at the Accurate Reloading forum and if you provide them with pictures they can probably advise you.

In 30-06 that sounds like quite a desirable rifle. Especially as a full stocked variation if it is a commercial rifle (as opposed to military rebuild).

I have other rifles so it is not a problem. I will try and research it a little more. As soon as I can I will post pics.
