sound suppressor

How exactly does a sound suppressor work? just curious...

There are a series of ports or baffles inside the suppressor body which slow down the escaping gas from the round firing.

To get the full benefit of a suppressor, you should use sub-sonic ammo so you don't get that super-sonic "crack".

Maybe Suputin will be by to explain this better. He is pretty knowledgable when it comes to suppressors.

Actually, this is false. Remember when Steven Segal taped a 2L pop bottle to his firearm's muzzle? It worked very well and had no baffles whatsoever.:p ;)

Thats because it was written that way in the script!!!!:D;)Anything in Hollywood works if the writers say so.:D;):p

Well I'm pretty sure that the stereotypic high pitched "pewww" sound that James Bond's PPK made very single time he fired it was historically accurate....

do they need to be cleaned at all, or do the internal parts(are there any?) need to be replaced after x amount of rounds?

I'd actually like to hear a PPK in real life... Always was a big 007 fan...

IIRC, they do need cleaning after "X" amount of rounds, and some require the baffles to be replaced.

SOme can be disassembled in the field and cleaned, while some need to go back to the manufacture to be cleaned & repacked.

Just like a vehicle muffler. Like Skullboy says, there's a series of baffles. A pop bottle might work for one shot out of a .22, but anything else would blow it off the muzzle.
You do get a 'phutt' sound, but you also hear the action opening and closing.
Nothing you see in movies and TV is real.

Depends on the design. Some older models had plastic wipes that would have to be replaced.

Many simply dismount the beast and soak it in gasoline, then blow it out with compressed air, or use one of the newer ultrasonic cleaners.

Dry or wet?

Some designs are to be used dry: they rely on turbulence to break up and slow down the gas column and divert it into many counter-resonant chambers. Sometimes, metal shavings (copper) are put inside a second plenum chamber and contribute to cool the gases and divert them by virtue of the enormous contact area and obstacles.
Some others make use of a fluid which, upon evaporating, cools the escaping gases and lower their volume. Some "Hush Puppy" U.S. cans were designed to be injected with liquid Freon a few minutes prior to use. Some did make use of a spray lithium grease which has a very high cooling factor when in contact with hot gases.

Here are a few pics of some various cans...

heres one for a .22lr, note the baffles

Heres a cutoff of a can where you can see the baffles and the chambers...

I like the fact that the Finnish government supported the suppressor trials to reduce the noise of hunters, and the risks that they are damaging thier dog's hearing.

They are illegal here because our government is ignorant and affraid. Anything that is unknown to them is bad, and therefore must be banned, taken away or destroyed. A silencer to them is not a noise reduction tool... it is a device designed for criminals, and there is no need for such a thing in this land we call Canada.

can anyone give me a rational explanation for why silencers are illegal?

Everyone knows that the only way criminals can get weapons, ammo etc is by stealing them from law abiding citizens, who own them legally. Can you imagine if we were allowed to have silencers? The gangs would then be able to acquire said "bad" objects (please note obvious sarcasm).
