Hi all,
I was wondering where I might go to find some affordable ammo for the new 30-06 I just received as a birthday present? I'm not a rich man, so I cringe at paying around $1/round to sight in and practice with this rifle. This is my first hunting rifle, and I want to be proficient with it's use before the fall. I don't mind paying a bit more for the ammunition I will actually use when hunting, since the volume of shots should be very low. It's just that I expect to shoot a lot more when sighting in and practicing.

Thanks,

$1 a round is pretty cheap for factory ammo. The good stuff is pushing $36 a box + tax. Seems like a good time to get reloading. $.50-.60 is alot easier to swallow.

Where I live a box of Barnes Vor-TX 180gr TTSX is $66/box. I can reload the same ammo for less then $30/box.

The start up cost of reloading can suck, but it's definitely worth it.

Thanks for the replies folks. I'm pretty much a rookie to shooting, and next fall will be my first hunting season. I do plan on getting into reloading, but have zero experience with it, and have not even seen anyone reload before. So I have a lot of learning to do, and a lot of investment to make in reloading equipment. The part of roll your own that appeals most to me is casting my own slugs and bullets. I've recently come into a fairly significant stock of lead, so that's a start at least.
As far as $1/rnd being considered cheap is concerned, it's still significantly more expensive than the .22lr, 7.62x39, and 12ga. target loads I've been shooting so far since getting my PAL this past fall. Maybe it's just rookie sticker shock and I need to get used to it.

Again, thanks very much for the input

Rookie sticker shock. Buck a round for .30+ caliber is the going rate. Keep in mind you won't be shooting a lot. A box at a time is likely all a rookie shoulder can handle. 308 and 30-06 is the cheap big caliber.

As for reloading you need gas check for rifle bullets. Going to need to shoot a fair amount to ever recover initial cost. Casting and reloading is itself another hobby (very time consuming).

another issue is the point of impact will change when you change the ammo.
so you'd better practice with the ammo you're going to hunt with.

you don't NEED gas checks, at least in all cases anyway. for cheap plinking rounds you can get away without them.

wait until you buy a 500 mag! 3.50 to 4 per shot factory. but with reloading and casting i can make them for .30 cents give or take per shot.

Cabelas was selling federal American eagle 150gr fmj for 19.99 but when I went back last week, the price went up to 25.99 per box. Cheapest I found there was the federal power shok for 20.99 per box.

When I started reloading I didnt know anything but watched some videos on youtube. There are some good ones there. Read some books and jumped in. I started loading because I was bored of shooting 22lr and wanted to shoot 223, and 30-06 more but cost was to much. $1-1.25 per round of 223 gets spendy quick. My reloads run me about $.34 a round and 30-06 runs about $.60 a round not $1.50-2 a round

And NOW you see why I wanted a 1919A4 in .308 instead of -06! ;)

Chinese stuff at $0.40/round works juuuust fine. I don't think I can even reload for that!

About 6 months ago, TSE was selling AE 150gr 'garand' ammo for about $1/round... Unlikely you'll see it that cheap again any time soon.
