Hey everyone,

I did my latest trip to Southern Alberta to shoot gophers in Warner County. This is the 4th year I have gone with a group that has been going for 10 years. We always go in May as they seem very active and the grass is still short.

I was wondering if it's worthwhile going in the fall when the temperatures drop or should I just stick with my annual trip in May? Is the grass shorter or will I need to find bare fields? It's almost a 30 hour round trip for me so I'd rather go when I can do a lot of shooting.

Thanks in advance!

I've attached a link to a thread I created with the gear that I use.

Gophers tend to start hibernation by the end of August so I wouldn't go in the fall, there will be no gophers to shoot at. You would be wasting a trip. Now is about the best time to go since the offspring are out and very active as well. Pick an area that has alot of pasture and cattle around, the cattle keep the grass nice and short.

Agreed.

May is far better than in the fall, the grass is long and gophers start to hibernate by mid September, stick with May you will burn way more ammo and that's the whole idea behind a good gopher shoot.

Thanks everyone. I'll stick with going in May and do my regular hunting in the fall. The problem is May gopher shooting has ruined all other types of hunting for me. I find it boring compared to the non-stop shooting I do!
