Hello Comrades

Was thinking of doing up a mannequin to accompany my SKS. I have this tunic here and was wondering if anyone could tell me if it is the correct vintage for an SKS (the tunic is dated 1969) and what the badges mean.

Thanks

Sombody else asked a similar question recently. I'd get the Osprey Men-at-Arms books on the Soviet army, either on Amazon or from the library if they have it. They're pretty comprehensive without being crazy expensive. The 3 volume World War II Soviet Armed Forces will only set you back a bit under $50. There's also The Red Army of the Great Patriotic War 1941-45 by Steve Zaloga (I used to know him slightly, he's a true expert) is only $7.00 used.

Similar question was about correct ww2 uniform. And OP is asking for correct post war uniform. So the book you mentioned won't help.

To OP. My knowledge has cut off date of 1945 for soviet uniform so the only thing I can tell you is that badge with red flag and head of Lenin means member of Komsomol (communist hitlerjugend for teenagers to youth), badge with running man means 3rd stage of sport achievements, badge with number 3 I dont remember, Guards badge, and the blue one I dont remember too. I also have a feeling it all was put together but I don't have enough knowledge to be sure.

The tunic is 100% from tank unit.

No incorrect. I would get the Gymaska tunic, the one with 3 front buttons. This tunic was in general use til the mid 50s, your tunic is later and a tank unit.

Here pics of my grandpa. He was in service from early to mid 50s. He never touched SKS. He said they had AKs. But I beleive that uniform should be correct for period in question.

Cool pics of your Grandpa! LIke many young soldiers, he appears to have taken a pic of every one of his different uniforms to probably send home to family. They provide a great snap shot in time for reference.

I do have one US Army Intel ref book from the US Army dated 1961. Near as I can tell, the tunic is M58 which was replaced approx. 1970 by the M69. It is a senior sergeant "conscript summer parade on duty uniform"

From the following site: http://www.undertheredstar.com/periods.htm

Soviet uniforms of the early Cold War period were based on those developed under the 1943 regulations, which returned a distinctly Imperial Russian look to the Red Army and Navy. Although minor changes were implemented in the years following the war, Soviet officer uniforms remained virtually the same from 1945 until the 1955 regulations were promulgated, while enlisted uniforms stayed about the same all the way up to 1970. Indeed, the average Red Army soldier of 1954 was virtually indistinguishable from his 1945 counterpart.

I managed to determine that the #3 badge is "Specialist, 3rd Class." Not sure what type of specialist nor if this means 3rd class or 3rd level.

According to ebay, the one blue badge implies graduation from a technical school university" whatever that means.

I found the running badge on ebay just now - the seller says its a "Warrior Athlete Sport Badge/Pin" another listing says 3rd class runner

The Osprey Series also covers the Cold War and current uniforms. Also historical eras at least as far back as the Roman Legions.
