I have been told that the Shadow is not allowed in IDPA because of weight and the full length dust cover. Is this just the SSP division? Can it be used in ESP? The stock weight is 41.6oz and ESP allows up to 43oz, and the full length dust cover is factory spec not a "modification". I have shot it in ODPL a couple times and carried it cocked and locked because there is no decocker. If it is allowed in IDPA under ESP, would it also be cocked and locked?

Both the SP-01 Shadow and the SP-01 are legal for IDPA PROVIDED they weigh 39oz. Both guns have full length dust covers and therefore must meet the division requirements for SSP division, one of which is the gun must weigh 39oz or less. Once down to 39oz they can play in either SSP or ESP division at the shooters option.

You can get the Shadow to make weight by replacing the grips with Dennis Marshal thin grips weighing .4oz and by replacing the mag brake with an aluminum version meant for the 75B. The SP-01 usually only requires the replacement of the the grips.

Another option, and perhaps a better one, is to order the new 75 Shadow now being produced. This version does not have the FLDC and weighs less than 39oz and is legal as it comes NIB. I have shot the 75 Shadow and it is a very nice firearm.

So the FLDC is considered a "modification" according to the IDPA rules? Even though it is the standard configuration from the factory on all SP-01's?

No that is not the basis for the exclusion. First guns may play in SSP that weigh 39oz or less. - the SP-01 and SP-01 Shadow weigh to much for this division in stock form.

ESP division does not allow guns with FLDC unless they meet all specifications for SSP division, weight being one of them, hence if you can get the SP-01 and SP-01 Shadow down to 39 oz they can play in either SSP or ESP divisions. SSP Division hs no exclusion for a FLDC but does have a lower weight limit.

For the purposes of the rules the words "modifications" and "features" mean the same thing. This was clarified sometime ago and brought forward in the new Addendum to the rule book. The clarification was necessary to prevent gun manufacturers from just coming out with a "feature" and claiming it wasn't a modification. The discontinued Para Tac-Five with the rubberized magwell was one gun that I recall that fell victim to this ruling.

I shuld point out CZ has just come out with a 75 Shadow without a FLDC and weighs in less than 39oz and is good to go in IDPA without and restrictions.

The Shadow is a fine gun for IDPA - provided you are willing to mess around with a few things.

There is a weight variance in pistols that can be an issue. Mine, for example, has unvarnished Marschall grips (and 2 skinny strips of grip tape) and I still have to shoot it without a mag break to make weight. Mr. Spray & Pray (who took 2nd place at this year's Alberta IDPA provincials - kicking my butt in the process) can get away with a shaved down mag break.

Swapping out the slide stop, installing a competition hammer, and lighter recoil spring, will also help you shave off a few grams.

Beltfed took a file to his rear sight and got a some weight saving there.

I've drilled holes in my magazine base pads to get a few grams of weight savings... Just don't bring those magazines to an IPSC match unless you like running with the Open guys.

After all was said and done, I now run a STI GP6-C so I don't have to fiddle with my gun when I switch between games... YMMV.

that was you that got bumped in that febuary match! i don't know why i remember that but i do... lol.

Nope... Not me. I shoot a GP6-C (now).

The guy who got a bump to Open goes by the CGN handle "Spray & Pray". (Which is indicative of his shooting style...;))

Lol good to know! but my style isn't much different. I'll be shooting my 1st match in production with my shaodow soon, I have a feeling i'm gonna get my ass whipped lol. then again I got my ass kicked in standard anyways so I suppose it's nothing new for me.
