SP MP 15 22 or AR15 with 22LR conversion

I'm interested in purchasing an AR15 however I'd like to also pick up a rifle that my girlfriend can have fun shooting. Naturally shooting 22LR is really cheap so that's always a plus. I came across the S&P M&P15-22 Sport rifles, it looks great! What is everyone's opinion on it? Any major issues?

My other option is to purchase an AR15 and purchase a 22LR conversion kit, I saw a conversion kit called the "CMMG AR15 22LR Brover rifle conversion kit". That seems to be a more practical option this way I can shoot the 5.56mm rounds and swap it out to the 22LR when she wants to shoot it. But how accurate is it?

I like both. A good friend has an M&P 15-22 and I have the CMMG conversion kit for the AR. The M&P is more accurate. The CMMG allows cheap practice with the same rifle.

Correct. The MP 15 -22 is more accurate then the cmmg drop in kit. I’ve had the MP15-22 and I have the cmmg kit now. You can search my thread history for pics of the accuracy of the bravo kit I have modded to use in my Modern Sporter. I’ve found with the 15-22 i could put a mag into 1” group at 25.

Few things to keep in mind. The 15-22 is super fun to shoot. Very light. But is limited to 10 round mags. The cmmg kit has 25 rounders. My cmmg kit runs excellent as did my 15-22. I do find my Colt Canada AR seems to be hard on the cmmg mags. They’re getting excessive wear.
If you want my two cents. I use my cmmg kit in the bush in my sporter so I have it pretty good. But honest opinion. If it’s for you gf and you don’t mind being confined to the range. The 15-22 is the ticket.

Thank you for your detailed experience. I reviewed your post regarding your experience with the kit, very well detailed and informative. The issue you had where the SMMR bolt not fitting, is that problem isolated to your modern sporter or was that across the board with most AR platform? I saw in a youtube video by a Canadian shooter "mmatt", he mentioned that there was an issue with blowback gas hitting his face. Have you experienced the same? It could be possible the conversion kit is a hit or a miss depending on the AR platform we have.

I was under the impression 25 round rimfire mags are prohibited, has that changed? I really hope so.

This is a very hard decision, I've always been "two birds with one stone" type of guy.

I understand that the MP15-22 has a higher twist rate and possibly a smaller bore barrel which could help with the accuracy, however, shooting 22LR I don't think I would want to shoot >50m. I'm more worried that the CMMR conversion kit doesn't work well with most AR platforms. I've read and heard they're some compatibility issues and would need additional modifications. I suppose that comes with the territory.

The issue with the CMMG bolt not fitting the Modern Sporter is because by design the Modern Sporter upper receiver is shorter than an AR upper reciever, so Alberta Tactical modified my CMMG bolt carrier. However the kit did work in my Colt Canada AR before it was modified and it still works, basically the way ATRS modified it, its now usable in both. I've used the CMMG kit in a Smith and Wesson MP15 also and it worked flawlessly. The kit is designed to fit any AR platform and to my knowledge and guns I've tried, the M&P and Colt it worked fine. I guess gas could hit you in the face if you are a left handed shooter but i never noticed it. To address the mag issue, the M&P is limited to 10 because there was some sort of pistol version possibly on the market hence the 10 rounders. The 25 round are legal to my knowledge because rimfire mag limit isn't restricted by capacity. The kit shoots accurate enough in my Modern Sporter because i have a 1-10 twist barrel for that reason. Most AR would be 1-7 or 1-8. But out to 25 yards they're plenty accurate and fun. I had my set up built so i could small game hunt with the 22 kit in. But i use it in my AR on the range too for some fun.
 
Perfect, this really helped with my decision. Thank you for the information. I think I might get the conversion kit simply because I'd like the capability to shoot 556 as primary and the option to shoot 22LR whenever my girlfriend tags along.
 
Honestly don’t do the 15-22. I had one and let’s face it, in Canada we can only use for target shooting not backyard plinking. The accuracy will get you so frustrated.
 
I have no issues at all with my MP15-22. Hella fun to shoot - wife loves it as well.

What accuracy issues are we discussing here? at 50? at 25? what grain and brand of ammo?

It's a fun little gun. Came recommended to me, and i recommend it here. I bought it so the wife could enjoy shooting something with me and it has satisfied 100%
