SP01 - lighter recoil springs vs 9mm ammo PF

Hi all,

I find that the default factory spring (that thin, flat metal spring) works fine with Winchester 124gr ammo (about 142PF), but when shooting Wolf reloads I, sometimes, get a stovepipe - the empty casing gets caught, it doesn't make it out. That is the same ammo which was the Kingston match ammo - low 130s PF. It was suggested to me to try a lower power recoil spring... The default one is what? 17lb? I'll be trying 14 next. Has anyone had any experience with those Angus spring? I'm worried about broken slide stops, in particular, which is what I had with some of my old CZs when using weak springs...

Comments?

Thanks!

I spoke with Angus of Ghost Holster yesterday about the exact same problem with my SP-01. He said that the factory recoil spring is 18# and meant for light bullets with hot loads. He must be getting pretty weary about repeating this same thing to all SP-01 owners like us. His solution, "get a 15# mainspring and an 11# recoil spring". I just ordered a 3 pack of each $26 US, shipped the same day. I hope it works but he was pretty certain.

I haven't had any malfunctioning yet while using factory ammo but the only factory ammo I've shot is the Remington 147 gr. The stovepiping started when I re-loaded with 138 gr. round nose FMJ (the only bullets available from Marstar at the time). I was using 3.7 gr Bullseye powder, Federal primers and made a power factor approx 135. The constant malfunctions were a pain while taking my Black Badge course. At least I'm now pretty good at fixing malfunctions while running around a stage. Not fun to say the least.
StoneHorse: What recoil spring weight would you recommend for shooting a mix of factory ammo and re-loads? It's a nuisance to have to change the recoil spring every time you want to change ammo.

Wink, If your reloads barely make minimum PF, use the 11# recoil spring otherwise stay with the 14# spring. Don't forget to switch back to factory weight springs before a match;) .

you can change recoil spring weights in production?

If it's available as "factory OEM".

So, CZUSA orders springs from Wolff, and re-sells them (they are, in some strange fashion, the OEM). So, Wolff springs are now production legal in CZs. Similar to how they re-sell a "competition" hammer and sear... read... aftermarket performance enhancing accesory, yet they are somehow factory OEM, in spite of never having been within 5000 miles of the Czech republic. nice.

What CZ gets away with in production division makes me think about switching divisions. An interesting note: CZ is one of the largest sponsors of IPSC Internationally.

Shocking, hey?

yep...production is going to the s**tz...

if ammo wasn't so much cheaper in 9mm i would switch to Standard.
40cal is not that much more expensive than 9mm. You could always shoot Standard in Minor PF. It would force you to greatly improve your skills. :D

Go to Ghostholster. Angus is the man.

15lb main, 14lb recoil for factory loads or 11lb for puff production loads. If you buy CZ stuff from Angus you are pd legal. You may want to go 16 lb main if using CCI primers.

The factory 18lb recoil is too heavy for anything. Turf it.

what gets me is that it's prod-legal to remote the firing pin safety in the SP01. I draw the line at that - I'm not doing that, i don't care about that extra 0.75lb that will take off my SA trigger pull.

I like the FO sights, the competition rear sight, I'll put in the slightly reduced recoil spring to make it work with the wolf ammo (it's not like I'm using under powered ammo), but I'm not taking any internal safeties out.

It's officially become DA-first-shot, Minor scoring category of Standard.

I don't care, I like that style of guns, I like 9mm, I'll keep on shooting it, but anyone clinging to the 'shoot guns out of the box' idea for Prod is greatly mistaken.

Ya after shooting that tricked out CZ (with everything under the sun added to it) you sold to Beltfed that I have yet to see fail to fire or jam, I would like to be first inline when you firesell your current pd gun for dirt cheap please.

"Everything under the sun" was new sights.

Oh, and just under $500 worth of gunsmithing to make it work.

So, here's a question, as I can't quite be sure from your post: Are you trying to be a ####, or be funny?

That's a tragedy, that is.

After this season (the triangle match), I was going to start shooting the Tanfoglio, but the tax man re-evaluated my life, and apparently I'm pretty damned worthy, because they want 1700. I still need $950.

That's not my old PD gun, that was my future PD gun. Damn it, I never even fired the thing!

Guess I'm sticking with the Glock!

It's like this: the brand new Tanfoglio is worth a bunch of money, because it is sweet, smooth, like butter, and brand spankin' new. The glock isn't woth a dime, because I have about 40,000 rounds through it, and the mag well is fuzzy from botched mag changes. I'd feel bad charging a guy $300 for it.

C'est la vie.

Hey, thanks for the free ad, BTW! :)

I must come off in a different light online chat wise. I was not intending to be a dink.

However, that CZ was smoother than my SP01. Which gunsmiths did you use? ;)

It went to Roger Kotanko, in Ontario... a couple or three times.

Oh, and Cheers, bro!
