I'm in the market for a Ruger 3" bbl .357 mag. Which is more durable for shooting .357 loads all day long if that's what I want to do. I know the SP101 is similar in size to a Smith K frame and was built to fill Rugers void of a concealment revolver....but at the expense of durability?

Thanks

the gp100 is obviously going to be more durable, so that is what you should get if durability is your only criterion.

the question is: is the sp101 durable enough? i have not heard of any durability issues with the sp101. though i don't if the sp101 would be the typical type of 357 one would buy to shoot all day long.

Is a 3" barrel legal in Canada?

3" barrel is perfectly legal as a class 12.6 firearms. I've owned the 3" SP101 and currently own a 2". It is more than capable of shooting 357 all the time, but is quite stout in recoil due to the size. Perfect for 38 special +P

Thanks for all the input everybody. I already have a couple of snub Smiths for my annual .38 special shooting fix. I think the PG100 would act as a better .357 all around range gun.

I've fired an SP101 in 357, and while it's not the worst gun I've fired for painful recoil (that was an Airweight J Frame 357 - the gun weighed about 14 ounces and the ammo was Federal 125 JHP), I wouldn't want to shoot the SP101 all day with 357 loads either.

Either one should only be around $300-$400 max due to barrel length...... buy them both and report back!

:)

If you aren't carrying the guns why not pay a little more and get a 4.2"er?

The newer model 4.2 SP101 is a pretty sweet gun.

i have both. the 101 is a great plinker with 38 Spl. I bit too small for 357, except for true defense.

The GP100 is huge and comfortable with 357.

A good compromise is the Security Six in 357. I have it in 4" and 3" (ported). A very good gun.

I think all three would be durable.

I think the GP 100 is a very well built revolver... But my 6 inch is gathering dust since i got a couple of Smith in the house... JP.
