There are Surplus Spam Cans and Cases of:

7.62 x 39
7.62 Nato (.308)
5.56 (.223)

readily available on the market, but I'm curious does anyone make Spam Cans (for long term storage, not military) of .22LR or 12 Gauge?

I don't recall ever seeing any, but being able to buy these calibre's in spam can style bulk would be pretty handy.

Hmm, how many .22lr could you fit into a spam can? It would probably be close to 3000 or so, eh?

Would maybe be an interesting buy.

More.
It's been a while since I've done it but I think 3,000 rounds gets you 2/3 of an ammo can.
It also depend on the size of can you have.
I was using the federal bulk 22 hollow points.

If I keep them in their bricks of 500, can store about 4,000 rounds. If I break up the bricks and store them in their boxes of 50, I can store 4,800 rounds per ammo box (50 caliber size from CanadaAmmo). I stick a large desiccant pack in each ammo box as I figure some cans may be stored for 5+ years.

Note that plastic will not keep moisture out in the long term. Water vapour goes right through plastic very quickly. Mylar is much better, and mylar with an actual sheet of aluminium laminated in mylar is even better.

Solid metal or glass is best by far.

In tests of various containers filled with colour changing desiccant, tested in a humidity cabinet, plastic didn't last a year, mylar about a year, triple laminated heat sealed aluminium foil bags lasted 2 years before the desiccant changed colour.

The only containers that lasted 3 years in the humidity cabinet with no desiccant colour change were metal and glass (mason jars). This report is from seed bank trials, but the principles apply to the materials in all configurations. The link to the tests is in the Wilderness Forum, seed bank thread.

Cabelas had the nice steel ammo cans with 2100 rounds of .22lr for a good price. ~$90 I think. They had pallets full of them. I wish I had bought more than one.

I bought a couple of these a few months ago, great deal :)

If anyone comes out with spam cans of 22LR I'm sure they would sell like crazy. I know I'd be in for more then a couple :)
