I have a spanish mauser that I would like to refinish the stock on. It has a gloss finish so I'm pretty sure it is not original. No markings except the serial number on all parts.

Does any one know how to get the front sight off? I've taken out the screws and the bottom seems to be stuck. I'm afraid to just yank it off.

And the Barrel band with the sling loop. Is that just held on by friction and can I just tap it off???

And out of curiosity what are the two thin pieces of metal that lead off from the front sight and the barrel band on the bottom of the stock. Do they have something to do with holding the two on?

I'll be using a Miles & Gilbert 'advanced' stock refinishing kit formula #5. Might not be close to the original but I have no space to boil linseed oil and other ingredients. Any one have experience with this type of kit?

Thanks for any help you have.

Well, whether or not it is the original finish depends if the "gloss" finish is due to varnish or just due to age and oil saturation. Varnish should be easy to spot as it will probably be chipping off or scratched in places.
