I have a Armas Ego Eibar SXS 12ga ejectors, 3" and 28" barrels. It is a sidelock. I believe it was made in 1977. It has some rust and bit of pitting on the barrels and blueing. I was thinking about maybe getting it reblued but didn`t know whether it was worth doing. It shoots well and I used it alot years ago when I bought it used. I was told that sidelock shotguns were worth a bit more than box locks. here`s some pics maybe someone will know, thanks

Most Spanish sxs shotguns are not worth a whole lot. Side lock guns are worth more. Be careful if having the gun re blued as some bluing tanks will disolve the solder holding the barrels together. I am not an expert by any means but a re blue would likely cost what the gun is worth. Having said that if you like the gun and want to re finish it go ahead! That is what makes working with firearms so enjoyable.

cheers Darryl

Are you sure it is an actual sidelock or are they just extended sideplates?

no it`s an actual sidelock as I had to get a gunsmith to fix a broken firing pin. Yeah I was thinking same as prob not worth the $$$ to get it reblued and also was worried about possible solder getting weak. So maybe someday it will get black rust paint can finish:D

Try shotgun world.com scroll down to gun I.D. and value. Give them all the info you can and they will give you an accurate value.

has an oval on bottom of barrels and in the reciver 4 all together says 12-76 rest is just proof marks 1000kp/cm and 1339gmo and bp sign and knights head and serial number starting with JZ

Cold blue

Did you ever consider cold bluing it yourself. No cost, no danger of damaging the solder and it can make it look much better. Kind of a middle of the road solution. I have some Birchwood Casey paste bluing that works very well. The secret is to get the gun well degreased............................................wTc

Thanks, Hori.
I was trying to determine if it was a "Pride of Spain" gun which would have an oval with POS in it. Pride of spain guns were cosmetically very good but were wrought with problems and sub standard internals (soft springs/firing pins etc...) They were instrumental in giving Spanish guns a bad name that still haunts them after 40 years. Your gun should be a good shooter. As for value, I would hazard to say that it might be worth $ 350 to $400 in good shape. As it is, and assuming you are going to use it as a shooter --- I would strip the exhisting blue off and cold blue it. If you want to get it reblued, do not have it "hot blued". It must be "rust blued" --- The bls are soldered together and hot blue will destroy it. Rust blue is the more expensive and the only option

Blue Wonder!!!

I just tried this stuff on a Salt-wood era browning t-bolt. It works awesome, is easy and about $30 for the kit.

If it were my gun and working acceptably I'd have the barrels reblued by someone who know what they were doing when it came to double guns. As Grouser pointed out hot blueing is not possible.

Armas Ego is described in Terry Wieland's book Spanish Best as a maker of medium grade shotguns. They also made double rifles. That means while not on the same level as an AyA or Garbi they would be a step up from the Pride of Spain or other lower end makers. Armas Ego was one of many small companies that merged into a company called DIARM in the 70's, a venture that ultimately failed.

A couple of years ago there was a group operating under the Armas Ego name but they seem to have disappeared. Spanish gunmakers have a tendency to come and go with the years.

Here's a link if you want to decipher the proof marks on your gun. There should also be a date stamp on it somewhere to let you know when the gun was made.

Hori:

If you "like" the gun, by all means, spend the $ 200 - $ 250 a decent 'smith
will likely charge you to rust blue the barrels. Somewhat like painting a car, most of the work blueing/re-blueing is in the labour involved in "preparation".

Money well-spent for a proper job. From your photos, it will really bring that
old gun back to life.
