spare parts vs spare gun?

I am firmly in the 'carry a spare gun' camp.

If my primary goes down my back-up is ready to go. I don't want to be rushing about trying to swap parts or trying to fit parts that I thought were exactly the same. I want the peace of mind of being able to pick up my No.2 and get back in the game.

I usualy have 3 at major competitions.
My primary, back up and chrono gun.

Sometimes you don't get to slip the chrono guy the full power ammo, so you have to swap out guns.
Slightly undersized barrel gets it done every time....

Maybe a few parts but a spare gun for sure, definitely one that uses the same magazines, ammunition, and holster and preferably with the same sights, trigger, grip, etc. as the primary.

Depending on the match there may not be time to fix anything even if you have the parts, tools and skills.

Bitterness aside (almost like he had it happen...) I like relliott's idea of a practice gun and a match gun.

While I'm not at that stage yet. I'd imagine that I'd want a spare gun for any major matches as well. Doesn't have to be the same gun, but having a gun is better than no gun and parts, imo.

I always take a spare gun. For CQB that means a spare pistol and a spare rifle. For pistol I don't care if the caliber is the same, but I want a pistol and mag that fits my holsters of the day. If I I using my 7.62 1911, then the back up is a 1911 in 9mm or 45ACP. If I take my M&P 40, the back up is my M&P 9mm (with 9mm mags).

For the rifle back up I take one that uses the same ammo as the primary. All mags fit my pouch.

I have never had a primary break down in CQB, but twice I have lent my back up to someone else who had a problem. In both cases there was nothing wrong with the other guy's gun. One forgot his mags and the other brought the wrong ammo.

In target rifle I have had to switch to a backup rifle because of a broken extractor. Some of my TR rifles now have a spare extractor buried in the stock somewhere. With a Savage it is easy to do.

Pilots learn about the three most useless things: The runway behind you, the altitude above you and the gas you left at the pump.

For a shooter the most useless thing is the gun you left at home.
