Shot my new wood griped tt33 this weekend and noticed that when i fired the surplus bxn rounds, on some shots a orange coloured spark was visible going down range. Never noticed this when i shot these guns in the past anybody else notice this ?

The odd spark is noticable in daytime, if you want something neat lower the lighting or shoot at dusk at an outdoor range, healthy amount of muzzle flash!

It is an especially awesome display if your TT33 happens to have a small mechanical problem, and goes full-auto... I have heard...

I noticed sparks going downrange when I first fired 1960's Czech ammo in my TT-33 as well. I got curious, and took a few of the rounds apart to see why.

What I discovered was that these old TT-33 rounds used a compressed load of a square flaked propellant, and that some of the load had caked on to the back of the bullet.

I suspect that this is the cause of the sparks - the burning caked load flaking off as the bullet goes downrange. It actually looks kinda cool!

Just my $.02....

Yeah, for some reason the pistol ammo is really dirty. I usually have flakes of green crud all over my arms after shooting mine as well.

Aint it great?! I'm always amused by the sparks and smoke out of that old ammo.

The jacket on the Czech 7.62x25 is copper washed mild steel. The sparks you're seeing is the steel-on-steel between the barrel and the bullet jacket.
