Hey everyone, I'll come on out right now and say I've never bought a firearm, so I'm a complete rookie to this.

Anyways, I visit the gun range very often and the biggest expense for me is the rental fees for guns (And ammo). I've finally decided to give in and purchase a firearm. Although I quite liked bull-pup rifles, my range doesn't allow for center-fire rifles. I also really like the look of the P90, but the closest range to me wont allow for it, and it's obscenely expensive. So, that left me with my favourite-looking weapon of all time: The SPAS-12.

Problem being, the SPAS-12 isn't legal in Canada. I assume that has something to do with the fact it can be fired semi-automatic (As all other semi-auto shotguns seem to be illegal too). Is there anyway to get it modified in to a pump-action only? Would that make it legal for import? If not, is there a pump-action shotgun that has a similar profile and folding stock?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

(And before people bring up the obvious, I know the SPAS-12 isn't exactly cheap, and it's somewhat brutish. But I find its excessive bulk somewhat charming.)

Alrighty, so if there's absolutely no hope in hell of making it legal, is there any other shotgun around that has a similar aesthetic? Thanks for your answer, by the way!

There are folding stocks for the 870 that fold onto the top of receiver similar to the SPAS-12s if you're interested.

Why are SPAS-12s prohibited anyways?

Ah, now the Remington I quite like, so that will work wonderfully! Thanks!

And I believe for the same reason the Striker, SPAS-15, LAW-12 and USAS-12 are: They're semi-automatic.

The SPAS 12 is hardly the way to go, and anyone who has fired slugs out of a top or bottom folder will tell you that it is a pain in the face! A short barrelled, full stocked 870 would be far more practical!

And it is prohib because it is scary, not because it is semi auto!

Pretty sure every gun store in Canada stocks semi auto shotguns! f:P:

Is that seriously why it is? But the SPAS-15 and HS-10 are both toy-like in dimension, and they're banned too!

And I know the SPAS-12 is relatively useless and impractical (I've shot it). But I actually kind've like that. It's something I enjoy about my cars though - grabbing something utterly dumb and ridiculous and having fun with it. lol

all those shotguns are banned because they looked scary and were out when the regs were written

not because they are semi auto, every gun store in canada has a rack of semi auto shotguns

Here is the help I will give you. Semi Auto shotguns are not prohibited. Just ones that look cool/scary. If you really want one, then fight to get the stupid laws changed. That is the best thing you could ever do with your time.

Why are SPAS-12s prohibited anyways?

Because the government is retarded. Gun laws make no logical sense. They can only ever serve to take guns away from law abiding citizens. Gun laws by their nature and design can never affect criminals. If you were a criminal with money, you could have a locker full of any and all the types of guns your heart desires. Or we can work to effect change so that we legally own and use them.

And I believe for the same reason the Striker, SPAS-15, LAW-12 and USAS-12 are: They're semi-automatic.

Please don't fuel the anti's propaganda. If you want a semi auto shotgun, and like Remington, buy a Remington 1100, and you can make that look sweet with a shorter barrel and nifty stock. Just make sure the barrel is over 18.5 inches and that the overall length of the gun with the stock folded is 26" or longer. That's it. I would go with a 20" barrel.

And it is prohib because it is scary, not because it is semi auto!

Yes.... You are correct sir!!!! And the whole reason for it being prohib is H:S:

Ok, mildly retarded follow-up question, so bear with me here: If the SPAS-12 is illegal due to the fact it looks beastly, isn't setting up an 870 to look like one going to get me in to the exact same issue? Or is it legal to modify to look scary?

I'm also a huge fan of the SPAS-12, ever since the first time I saw one in a movie. If you want a semi-auto shotty with that kinda bulky look, you might look into the setup I'm planning on building. I'm getting a remington 1100 from my Dad, it's semi-auto and I found this forend for it: ht tp://www.elitetacticaladvantage.com/products/shotguns/bobcat/bobcat_1100.html There's also a handful of tactical style pistol grip stocks for it, but if you want a pistol grip with a top folder like the spas I believe you have to move part of the gas system, and then it should accept the top folder desgined for the 870. I'm still looking into that aspect of it.
