Does anyone know what the actual laws are regarding pinning a 10 round mag to 5 rounds? Let's say someone were to acquire a semi auto rifle with a 10 round mag that had for whatever reason never been pinned. Does the pinning have to be welded, or is this something that could be screwed or riveted into place? It seems a shame to permanently alter a vintage firearm in a way that is not reversible.

Drill hole and blind rivet. As long as it holds no more then 5 rounds for a centerfire rifle you are fine. If it doesnt its a prohibited device and the RCMP/OPP will instantly raid your house

Without drilling a hole in the body.

Many magazines have a slide-off floorplate, retained by a stud on a plate. Make a blocking device to limit follower movement. Design will vary depending on the spring type and the follower. Rivet the device to the floorplate, using the existing hole.
Capacity is limited, and the magazine cannot be disassembled to reverse the limitation without cutting steel.

Not exactly right. A bolt action centerfire has no mag limit. A semi has a limit of five in the mag.

Not exactly right. It all depends on the magazine, and what it is designed and manufactured for.
The magazine itself is either prohibited or exempt without a firearm being present.

good to know--excellent info

There are guidelines on how magazines may be limited. When the current law came into effect, there were instructions circulated, with diagrams. One drawing showed an AK magazine carefully blocked to 10 rounds.

What rifle and magazine? It would be a Shame if u pinned a perfectly fine 10 rounder when it wasn't required

(4) A cartridge magazine described in subsection (1) that has been altered or re-manufactured so that it is not capable of containing more than five or ten cartridges, as the case may be, of the type for which it was originally designed is not a prohibited device as prescribed by that subsection if the modification to the magazine cannot be easily removed and the magazine cannot be easily further altered so that it is so capable of containing more than five or ten cartridges, as the case may be.

(5) For the purposes of subsection (4), altering or re-manufacturing a cartridge magazine includes

(a) the indentation of its casing by forging, casting, swaging or impressing;

(b) in the case of a cartridge magazine with a steel or aluminum casing, the insertion and attachment of a plug, sleeve, rod, pin, flange or similar device, made of steel or aluminum, as the case may be, or of a similar material, to the inner surface of its casing by welding, brazing or any other similar method; or

(c) in the case of a cartridge magazine with a casing made of a material other than steel or aluminum, the attachment of a plug, sleeve, rod, pin, flange or similar device, made of steel or of a material similar to that of the magazine casing, to the inner surface of its casing by welding, brazing or any other similar method or by applying a permanent adhesive substance, such as a cement or an epoxy or other glue.

and I have had magazines that they modified the follower with a longer extension that would hit the bottom plate of the magazine limiting the mag to 5 rounds.

not really covered as an approved method but these came in with a batch of M305 rifles.

I have also encountered pistol mags that had a long screw in the bottom of the mag follower that did the same thing.

in both cases the bottom plate has a rivet in it to prevent disassembly of the mag.

The OP specifically said ".. a semi auto rifle with a 10 round mag that had for whatever reason never been pinned." A semi-auto mag should be pinned for 5 rounds. Any semi-auto (except the Garand).

Any rifle that uses for example AR15 magazines manufacturered for the rifle would need to be pinned. However, not the case for a LAR15 or XCR pistol mag which is compatible. This is why I'm asking, because I've met gun owners that would ask the same Q as the OP about LAR mags...

Doesn't hurt to get that clarification does it? Anyways up to the OP to state or not

I can force an 11th rd into some of my 10 rd magazines, but there is so much spring tension that the top rd will not strip off when the bolt closes and it is impossible to seat the mag with the bolt closed.

This whole mag capacity thing is sheer bull sh!t when the rcmp and politicians trust pop rivets more than Canadian gun owners. The Swiss would laugh.

.... which makes mag cleaning difficult if not impossible. But - it does make Canadian society a safer, gentler place and we should be glad of our opportunity to contribute in this manner.
