SpectreDR eye relief and BUIS...

Hello CGN! A friend told me to come check you guys out with a problem I have been having.

I bought a SpectreDR 1-4x awhile back, with the intention of using it as an 'all-purpose' sight. Problem being, it seems I cannot find a working setup of back up iron sights and eye relief... and I don't want to use the crude open sights on top of the scope body.

Mounted on my Swiss Arms Classic Green, I have to bring my face way, way, way forward to the point where the rear drum sight is practically up my nose. It's not so bad on my AR-15, but I still prefer it back another inch or so.... RIGHT where my rear sight sits!

What do you guys do?? Suggestions? As it is, I really like the optic, but I just can't get comfortable with the setup...

I love that optic. I had the same problem as well on 1x. On 4x, eye relief didnt seem to be a problem for me.

Ive read online as well that this has been a common complaint for this optic. Its too bad because it really would the the "perfect" do all optic. for me at least

My Classic green has a B&T scope mount in front of the rear sight (drum). With the drum on setting 1, the scope fits perfectly over. The eye relief is perfect. I added the CanadaAmmo cheek-rest and the set-up is perfect!

The cheek weld is too awkward for me on the Classic Green. I tried it on my AR, my XCR, and my M14 in a Troy MCS... it's only really comfortable on the AR (11.5" bbl, can you say overkill?)... the M14 works, but it adds so much more weight to the system.. plus this is the 5.56mm BDC reticle so...

I want to shoot this thing dammit!

Did you read that I use a clip-on cheek-rest on the Classic green to make it confortable? To me it's a perfect setup.

I think it's also well suited for your AR. 11.5" can still be accurate to easily 300m. (the BDC will be inaccurate but you could find it's values and note your ballistic chart) Anyway a 4x zoom is useful at 100m too.

Yeah I may try that next...

I'm keeping my Aimpoint H-1 w/ 3x magnifier option on my 11.5"... although I usually run with just the Aimpoint. It's enough to do man sized targets out to 150-200yards.

Sell the Spectre and get one of these ;)

I'm actually seriously considering selling the SpectreDR... Although Farmboy, I've got a Trijicon 1-4x w/ red triangle reticle, and I find that the best compromise between speed (95% as fast as I am with an Aimpoint/EOTech) and accuracy.

Is the Razor HD worth the extra $500 over the Accupoint?

Ahh that's a nice one as well!

I know I won't be popular for this....

But before looking for back up sight options, I would look at how you'll be using the gun, and what the odds of 'needing' the back up sights would be.

The Spectre is not something that could be considered a light duty optic, and will take a lot of abuse before being unserviceable. So I would think the actual need of back up irons, even in a general hunting and recreational role, would be so slim as to be unneeded.

See Darrens SL8 above, no need for irons. And I have 2 AR's, one with a magnified optic, one with an rds, that I'm not going to bother putting irons on, because the cash can go to other things.

That's just my opinion though (I know there's no reason needed other than just wanting it).

BUS could also be a laser or MRD.

If you go with the Accupoint instead of the Specter, you still have a experiment to find the rings that will allow the scope rear bell to clear the BUIS and then might need a cheek riser. But I agree that the Specter would benefit some mount options.

The accupoint is on my xcr, and will likely stay. I'm about 40/60 on selling the damn thing and just going with an ACOG of some sort.

The ACOG don't have much more mounting option and the eye relief isn't longer.

Here's the setup I tried describing as perfect for me:

-Specter 1/4x on B&T rail
-3-point sling mounted lefty with paracord on gas-block.
-Canadaammo airsoft good cheek-rest

4X ACOG is not going to help you at all - you will have to find a sight with much longer eye relief.

If you have trouble with Spectre, even the TA11 series won't help you. Both have about 2.5" of eye relief. Most of the combat sight has short eye relief.

you best bet is to have a traditional telescopic sight so it can be mounted more rearwards on the ring.

The classic green with iron sight is not designed for optic mounting - the optic mounting is an afterthought. A flattop is a much better platform for optic.

yeah i had the ta11 in mind... I had given it a feel a few months back and had good vibes from it, but you are correct about the eye relief, greentips. Ho hum. Maybe i'll just sell it and buy another AR. Appreciate all the responses and input.

I used the spectre dr optic during my time in service and I have never seen one go down... And even though the irons on top of the optic look crude, they work just as well as a BUIS...
